Purnells tomorrow

If its not too late...
I went last month. If you are just going for a 'treat', definitely worth going for the taster menu. It is great and gives you smaller versions of many of the starters/mains/deserts - meaning that you do not have to decide on, say, 1 main. Even though some of it may sound a little strange, it really does work very well.
Also, we had the wine with it - which was also fantastic.
All, in all, it was a great meal and well worth the cash for a one off.
P.S. don't worry about the dress code either - it is fairly relaxed in there!
Regards
Oscar

Yes i did see Glynn. He was doing an interview in the reception area when I arrived.
Complex menu to recite but highlights for me were the duck coated in a charcoal liquorice, a fantastic hot chocolate mouse with mango sorbet, excellent monkfish with spiced lentils. The details of the menu are on the website.
Interestingly I had a similar monkfish dish at Plasbodegroes near Pwhelli recently that was even better than Glynns in my view. They are trying to regain their star and the chef is one to watch.
Price all in for two was 190, but the only drinks we had were 2 glasses white, 2 red, whisky and canada + bottle water. If you want to hammer the vino get saving.
At turners on a Sat evening we had tasting menu for 4. G&Ts 5 bottles of wine +amerettos and the bill was £200 per couple. Excellent value!

Tapeworm, that looks good. We've stopped eating out anywhere other than at top restaurants once evry 6-8 weeks or so. They are expensive but I love cooking and couldn't hope to recreate what these michelin star chefs serve up. Where is your next destination?
That's a great approach to dining out, I'm no chef but there have been a plenty of times where I've known I could have done a better job that the chap I'm giving good money to at a generic local restaurant.I don't have anything specific lined up at the moment other than a trip to Le Caveau in Skipton in a couple of weeks, I'd like to sample the gourmet break at Northcote though, a small lottery win would secure me a 2 night treat.

Wow at Purnells! Either prices are going up, or the nice places in B'ham are charging a lot. Turners sounds more sensible. At turners on a Sat evening we had tasting menu for 4. G&Ts 5 bottles of wine +amerettos and the bill was £200 per couple. Excellent value!
We paid £500 for a meal for 4 (tasting menu, 2 bottles wine, 1 bottle water, coffee +P4s) at Petrus nearly 3 years ago, but that's got 2 Michelin Stars.
Paid €171 for 2 for the second-to-top menu at Le Benaton in Beaune last month, inc. 1 bottle of wine plus water.
Paid ~£150 for 2 for the tasting menu plus 1.5 bottles wine plus aperitifs at the 3-AA Rosette (~1 star) restaurant at Middlethorpe Hall in York about 4 years ago.
...and Edmunds was a little over £150 for 2 for the tasting menu plus 1.5 bottles wine.

There are bargains to be had if you go for set lunch menus. At maize grill we had a three course cocktail each and bottle of red £80. However, the lure of the tasting menus and greater choice in the a la carte menus is often too tempting. Can't recommend Turners enough. Simpsons also very good. We often go to a gastro pub The Palmerston in East Dulwich where the proprietor is the ex head chef from Bibendum. Excellent grub but always £75 a head with drinks. I don't mind if it's good. The London starred restaurants are not drastically different in price to those I have sampled in the midlands.Yet to do a 2 star although The Square is on my list for autumn.
