First of all, thanks to Melv for recommending them as they seem a really good bunch. Very impressed by the service so far.

They have raised a couple of points on my car. First of all, lower wishbones need replacing. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it may be possible to get these rebushed now. Is this correct, or am I better off shelling out the £160 plus VAT, plus fitting, plus alignment check? Next point is that my car has a bit of a dodgy G-pipe on it (looks a bit home made) and a cat, which is minus the heat shield. The G-pipe really needs replacing (it is not attached at all so is a bit wobbly). If i get a new one and a cat bypass, is my car likely to scrape under 105dB? Ideally I would be under 100dB, but I think this is unrealistic.

There were also a list of other fairly minor bits that I'm sure will end up costing a packet. When I bought the car I had an inspection carried out, but none of these were raised. if anyone wants to know who i used, mail me offline (I'm not a name and shame type person), but I would recommend GT One for an inspection, they have been very thorough.

To keep the noise down I would go for a cat bypass but run the other 2 silencers.

Still might be a tad marginal for 98Db days tho.

100 cell race cat, Cup pipe, final silencer, 105-107db static.

I have a silencer to replace the tailpipe from Merlin at Castle Combe that knocks a couple of db off.

Have also just picked up a rear box to replace the Cup pipe, (shame) that may take off another decibel -but I've given up all hope of getting it below 100db!!

Glad u r please with GT1, saw yr car there yesterday -BTW, it needs a wash!!

Ref the front wishbones, somebody is working on a rebushing replacement, since it is available for the 944, Bert Gear at Berlyn services possibly? Don't know if it is available yet.

Cat bypass/rear silencer/G-pipe = 107dBa
Cat bypass/cup pipe/side silencer = 105dBa
Cat/rear silencer/side silencer/undertray = 100dBa ish
all measured at 0.5m from tailpipe.
Large diameter tailpipes typically add another 1dBa.

Buy new wishbones, it's an RS and needs to be right when it is driven like a loon on track - your wallet will recover but you only have one life. Make sure you buy the correct RS wishbones, the rubber is a different hardness in the bush compared to standard.

Clarkey, could you not tell that the wishbones were past their best? I would have thought this would have upset the handling particularly on a 964RS.

Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't noticed that anything is wrong, but I've only done 1000 miles in it so far, and none on track.

You're right, there is no point messing around, I'll get it done properly.

Real men go for nylon bushes - all round mind you.

As a badger basher I found that some nobber had put one rubber wishbone on one side and one nylon one on the other. Didn't help the hedgerows.

That said, nylon ones aren't really recommended for road use. If you want a second opinion, ask Melv. He knows a thing or two about synthetic bushes.

"Cat/rear silencer/side silencer/undertray = 100dBa ish "

Tks for that Colin -in the pursuit of doing more track days, have literally just come in from garage having now got the rear silencer on and all tight and working.

Surprising on a test drive how it's knocked the throttle response, until it hits the usual 4200rpm. It's definitely quieter inside, and becuase of that I can now hear other noises......

I got the car back last night. We decided not to do the wishbones and disks/pads until the summer as there is plenty of wear left in both.

We also changed the gearbox oil for a Redline synthetic with friction modifiers for LSDs. It has made a big difference.

Major service, a bit of work on the exhaust...£800. A bit less than I had expected, so I'm very pleased with the service.

What do you mean? What was the problem? Did it make the LSD less noisy?

Thanks
Piers

Yes. Better gear change from cold too.

i am a bit confused by the friction modifyers for the lsd...could you let us know what that means. it may be a little quiter but will it still have the same performance under load?

Dunno....Redline say they supply a lot of gear oil to Porsche racers in the US, and are very happy with its performance under load.

I'm not sure about the precise additives, I think it it makes it 'less slippery', but I'm no expert.

The LSD on my RS used to make some awful noises particularly when reversing on full steering lock.

Changed the gearbox oil to Redline (as suggested by 9M), noise all but disappeared.

Colin -did you do any RR tests at the same time?
