chassis outriggers help.

Its been seven years of good ownership now, carried out various refubishment on the chassis over the years by grinding / sanding down to bare metal & treating & applying POR15.

However, seems some parts of the outriggers have been rottting from the inside out & the drivers side rear part is now bearing a big hole, or some may call it a 'break' in the tube.


oh dear, the car passed its mot only a month or two ago with flying colours, no sign od rot!

Trouble is, i need to sell the car as we have a new baby & the wifes not too keen on me fitting the maxi-cosi. So do i try to repair as best as possible, or sell for less with the troubles described in the advert & potentially scare off buyers before they get to the end of the advert?????


Took it to a local place today & they recommend lifting the body, but would rather do a full restoration for about 3k than just a quick fix.


Im in Leicester, anyone know anywhere reasonable?

3k sounds a lot, I'd pay more attention to the quality of the work than proximity to Leicester. RT Racing at Sheffield I've heard good things, there's also Guiglielmi Motorsport a bit nearer.
If the car is legal I wouldn't be too worried driving ot about for a quote.

As far as I'm aware the MOT is a visual check only, so if it looks sound in the eyes of the law it is, even if the tube drops off the next day

I think full body off would be a job for someone else, cant justify the outlay as I wouldnt be able to add to the end price.

Partial lift to repair would be the better option short term, the car still drives fine & as I said has full mot, so road legal to take it various places for quotes etc....

....in fact it drives so fine in the early morning dense cool air, that I dont really want to part company.... dont think my wife reads this.... whats the chance of pretending its sold......?

I may be at Ashby Folville next Tuesday if I can escape work early enough, have a chat with some of the guys there.

I would expect you will still get a reasonable price for it off someone who knows what needs doing and wants to do it themselves... how many "replaced outriggers" have been done by amateurs or even bodgers in the past ? if they are wanting to do it themselves, material cost is small so you dont need to factor in a huge amount for repairs... try the market and see what interest there is.

ebay could be a good option - there will be plenty of takers willing to fix it. Either put a reserve on or start the bidding at £1500 or whatever you think the minimum is you'd take. Maybe start a bit higher and relist if it doesn't go.
