I know Vegas gets quite a few threads on PH, but rather than dig up old ones I thought I'd add to the pile.
I've been before, but didn't make the most of it, and on a bit of a whim it turns out I'm heading there again on Thursday for a week.

I've got a small list of stuff I'd like to get done while I'm there, mainly centres around test driving cars, hiring something fun, getting some more tattoo work done and eating my own bodyweight in fast food.

So, what's the best things to see and do, preferably around the vegas area (done the grand canyon stuff). I'm mainly there to veg out for a week and just mosey around looking at the various tat, but some more petrolheaded suggestions would be sweet. smile

I assume you've been to the grand canyon? There was a handgun shooting place I liked the look of, but my wife wasn't so keen. We did a nightime helicopter ride over the strip, short but impressive. There's a fantastic firework shop either North or South of LV but I can't remember which - you'd have to google it. Not my favourite place though.

erm...do you realise how hot it's going to be?

Unless you're flameproof or something, you probably won't be able to go outside at all!

Mario Andretti and Richard Petty both have race schools at the Las Vegas Speedway.

Depending on when you are going the NASCAR GP may be on as well.

40 degrees or thereabouts, little on the hot side but I'm fine with that given how prevalent AC is out there. Same deal with Dubai and I loved the summers there smile

if you have any clue about poker and like cocktails the $2/$4 limit game at Planet Hollywood (which maybe has lucky initials) is a great way to take money off Goose and Mav wannabes from the Air Base up the road...I am a st player usually but took $300 on my first evening fresh off the plane. Free drinks every 20 minutes meant I had to stop there as I was about to either fall asleep or pee my pants or both.

The temperature is bearable as it is so dry - it just sucks the moisture out of you and windy conditions make it worse. I personally like it - just drink lots of water!

As for stuff to do - what about the Atomic Testing Museum? I had wanted to go there but didn't have time, so unforunately can't say what it was like though! Same for the car museum in the Imperial Palace.

I visited that last time I was there. It has no added smoke and mirrors that the rest of the strip hotels would add to it. It's simply a brilliant eclectic collection (and showroom as most exhibits are for sale) of loads of interesting old American muscle and European sports cars. Well worth it if you've got a couple of hours to spare.

If you go to the tix4tonight booths you can get half price entry too, it's only about £10 dollars anyway.

some interesting 'facts' about some cars. Their pricing is a little on the high side too, IIRC.

If you are after a bit of an adrenaline rush you could head to the Stratosphere tower. They have some rides up at the top of the tower and you can also jump off the thing too. I almost st my pants just watching someone do it. Not for me I'm afraid. I wish I was able to do it but I have no head for heights at all!

There is a karting track somewhere too and a Nascar place where you can drive a virtual Nascar and also ride a kind of roller coaster which is supposed to simulate the G forces a Nascar driver experiences.

Another good thing to do is seeing the fountains at the Bellagio. Really good at night. The hotels themselves are worth a tour around too. Venetian has an amazing indoor Venice mock up. The ceiling is quite deceiving. Ceasars is also impressive. If you are into sports on TV then head to Legasses Stadium in the Pallazo which is an interesting take on a sports bar.

Oh yeah, and the bar on Times Square in New York, New York is good fun too. They'll play literally anything you like for a couple of bucks and once there are a few people in, the atmosphere is great.

Its a really fun place to go. However after 3 days and nights, we were kind of Vegas'ed out a bit. Must be getting old I think!

I got back last week and we are planning to go back.. There is so much to do we never got a chance to do it all.
Where are you getting the tattoo done? A mate I went with wanted one and some of the prices they asked for were a joke but that was at the fancy looking places. He ended up at 3 lions in the Sahara after a girl in the Apple store recommended them.
On our list to do next time is the Gun store, Stratosphere jump and as it will be part of a road trip arriving in a big muscle car.
As for vegging out it depends where you stay, we were at the Bellagio and the pool area was amazing apart from the drinks being a bit pricey but who cares when you are on holiday.

They had a '60's' Mini Cooper for sale at around $25000, which was clearly an 80's shell.

If you really enjoy the heat that much, drive to Death Valley - it'll be nice and toasty warm there.

Cheers guys, enjoying it so far despite having achieved very little other than chasing tail and getting hammered. Made a few quid playing blackjack which is a first for me, normally terrible. Haven't braved the poker tables yet but that'll be on the cards soon, no pun intended.

Look forward to seeing the car museum, and meant to be doing a quad bike trek into the mountains if I can be bothered. I'll be sure to try some of the suggestions though smile
