I have just bought a new car I rang my insurance for a quote and they told me it was to close to my renewal date to give a proper quote but to insure for the next 5 weeks would be £13.50 + an admin charge of £13.50 I asked the guy how much extra it would be for the next 12 months and he said on the basis that it was only going to cost £13.50 for 5 weeks he said about £140 extra taking that onboard I bought the car my new quote has arrived today £880 it was £417

As its so close to your renewal date can't you find a better quote online and cancel the existing policy?

Is the new car of a higher insurance group than your current car?

The guy on the phone can't make judgements that far in advance as insurance rates fluctuate frequently and it can be a case of it was cheaper then, than it is now.

Was the 5 weeks to cover you until the end of your policy?

That's quite hard to get through....

Scammed? I don't think so as it sounds like employee error rather than a deliberate attempt to commit a fraudulent transaction

Worth calling the manager of the company, as I'm sure the call will have been recorded (they usually are) to get his/ her take on it.

It would be for the 5weeks ontop of his original premium! I had a similar situation a while back, but with much greater differences!
What cars are they? Old and new?
Definitely shop around!

Then its time to look for a new policy, rather than renewing with that company. Or you could try moaning on the web, and see if that gets you anywhere smile

I think...

He paid £417 for a years insurance.
He changed his car 5 weeks before the policy ended.
He was charged £13.50 + £13.50 Admin charge for the change of vehicle for the 5 weeks left to run on his policy.
For his renewal he was expecting to pay somewhere in the region of £417+£137 (10.2 x£13.50)total £554
Actual renewal quote £880.
Has he been scammed?
Answer .......No.

For various reasons.....Change of rates/insurance company hoping you'll just renew/ they never charged you enough for the 5 weeks/had an accident/speeding fine/lost NCB etc etc.

Just shop around and get a new quoute from hundreds of people offering insurance. Take best quote.
