McLaren will launch a follow-up to its iconic F1 hypercar in 2012, more than two years earlier than originally planned.

A successor to the F1 had been expected later in the decade as McLaren instead focused its efforts on setting up a new car company from scratch, developing and marketing the MP4-12C and establishing a dealer network to sell its models through.

McLaren insiders have told Autocar, however, the firm is working flat-out on a new F1, a car described as a “revolutionary” hypercar and one which will be instantly recognisable as such. This is in contrast to the MP4-12C, which has been criticised for its unadventurous styling.

The new F1 is the subject of an intensive development programme said to be among the speediest the industry has yet seen.

The new F1 will be mid-engined and will feature a carbonfibre monocoque similar in concept to the MP4-12C’s. Despite its creators’ radical approach, it will still bear some similarities to the original F1. These, however, are largely coincidental and it is not yet clear whether the car will feature the same central driving seat as its predecessor.

As with the MP4-12C and the original 1992 F1, major emphasis has been placed on saving weight; the new F1 is expected to pioneer many new solutions in this field.

It will also feature novel wheel and lighting designs, both contributing much to its distinctive look. There’s no word yet on the car’s powertrain, but it is expected to break new ground, possibly with some low emission solutions. Standard-setting suspension is also a certainty.

The F1 successor will be the second of McLaren’s trio of new models – the third is thought to slot beneath the £150,000 MP4 12C. The planned price of the F1 successor is unknown, but it’s likely to be substantially more than the 12C. But rather than a limited edition, as the F1 was, it is expected be a regular series model.

Just looks like a botch up between a Zenvo st1 thing, an EB110 and a Gallardo, with some other cues thrown in for good measure

It looks like a semi-melted model of an F1 had been kicked down a flight of stairs. I hope to God it looks nothing like that.

I wonder how bringing forward P12 will impact the delivery of the convertible and GTR versions of the MP4-12C.

It hasn't been built yet and already there is some oddball replica built using some duct tape, filler and a knackered old VW beetle

Impressively, that article contains almost no information at all.

And describing the F1 as a limited edition is a bit rich, they sold as many as they could, no limits there.

What can they do that is revolutionary? It wont be able to beat Bugatti for Speed, it probably wont be able to out power it, if it uses hybrid/green powertrain then its likely to be unpractical and heavier than it should be. It wont be lighter than the F1 realistically.

I really cannot think of anything it can do that hasnt been done before to be called revolutionary. Will be good though.

No, it was always going to be a limited edition.
It's true that they may have sold as many as they could do at the time, but that number was less than the original announced limit.

It was the opposite to the F40, which was announced as a limited edition of 500, which Ferrari limited to 1300.

Paring away the paragraphs of filler, the crux of that article is nothing more than:

" There's a rumour that McLaren are trying to knock out a new car in 2012, two years ahead of schedule "

Which, given the source, loosely translates as

" McLaren are definitely trying hard to knock out a new car 2 years ahead of schedule. You heard it here first, because we probably made it up. Oh, and here's one of our famously bad photoshop lash ups of a car that'll look nothing at all like the finished article, which frankly the tea boy could have done a better job of. "

Autocar really are dire.

makes such good financial sense to sell cars at a massive loss.
