I often wonder if one looks a tw@t driving around with the roof down and sunglasses on at the age of 41. Not posing, just enjoying the open air and sunshine.

However, a young Ukranian lady on hols told me she thought I was about 30 recently. I liked her hehe

So what age do you think one should get all sensible and have a middle of the road conservative car?

I'm talking daily drivers here BTW.

You're never too old for a good car.

Let's be real, most owners of top end sports cars are "old". They're the only ones that can afford them smile

Personally, I think you should drive what you want, and not be so shallow as to care what strangers think.

See heresmile

Edit to say I don't class 41 in the same age segment as the people mentioned in that thread, but the sentiment is the same wink

I think only people with self issues have a problem about age and what "image" the car portrays.

If you want one and have the money - get one. Seriously why give a toss that someone you don't know and are likely never to meet again might disapprove? confused

I'm 41, I've just bought a car with a targa roof.

Frankly I don't care too much what people think, I just love driving my car!

(I admit though, the aviator shades and '80s rock music eminating from the car may influence peoples opinions!)

It depends if your hair-sprayed comb over is flapping like a flip top bin lid. In that case - hard-top!

I'm 44 with an S2000 and must be one of the youngest rag-top drivers in my neck of the woods!

I do see a bloke in a boxter who's like 60 odd sometimes near work, with the top down it looks tragic. I'm sure he will see himself driving it in a shop window and sell it!

You're not quite there yet mate, go for it. After all, my dads building an ultima and he's 52!

Mate of mine has been away with the Lotus lot in Scotland recently. Seems there is a Supercharged Honda'd S1 giving it some serious beans, and the owner is a 70 year old chap...

Why do you think most TVR owners are middle age? They're the only people who can afford to run/insure them. Do it!

Oh, I've had a ragtop for years - started with a TVR smile

I just wondered whether I should be more sensible and buy an M5 wink

To be honest, there are a lot of occasions where a 2 seat car is impractical and I also don't like street parking a soft top. I think the novelty of open top driving can also wear off after a few years.

I'm personally not so worried about what folk think. I know some people are though. I've never had any comments but that could be cos I look a bit younger than I really am wink

I agree - it sometimes depends on the driver / car combination.

In St Ives yesterday I parked next to another porsche but this one was a silver convertible, very pretty car. When I got back from the shops the owner was jut driving off - fat, sweaty and he had the most awful greasy awful comb over, it was starting to wave in the breeze! yuck Looking like that he really shouldn't drive a convertible!

But a bit later, coming back on the St Just road I was overtaken by an very old white haired guy driving a lovely green Triumph TR with the hood down. He had followed me for a while until he could pass and then shot off down the road with a wave, a big grin and a blast from his airhorns. Made me smile!

Why is it tragic?

I am sure he is enjoying it fine and that is all that matters.
If I am still around in my 60s and beyond there is no way I will be settling for a dull car just because someone else otherwise thinks it looks 'tragic'.

I only care what my very close friends and family think, as they are the only ones that really matter to me, on any matters in life.

Buy what you want to buy. If you live your life to portray an image on what you want strangers to think, that IMO is a pretty shallow and pointless life.

I'm not saying he should have a dull car. The bloke I see obviously doesn't give a toss what other people think, but maybe the OP does so I mentioned it, after all he has asked us for our opinions. If he didn't care what people think he'd just do it?

Tbh I'm 20 and I bet people think I'm a tt when they see me driving around too. I think it's more jealousy than anything when people see you in a nice car and they've got a shed. Regardless of age etc.

I say go for it.

Kiinda curious, but if this is the case, why in your OP, the first line no less, did you ask:
