Griffith 500 values
Discussion
It's been almost 10 years since I sold my last Griffith 500 and I am now in the market for another one.
I am aware of the things to look out for with cars which are now all at least 8 years old but I do not really know what they are worth. One particular dealer seems to have a lot of rather pricey stock but there are other cars (private and dealer) for somewhat less which seem to have been for sale for some time.
I understand that condition is all but am I right to think that a decent well sorted car should not be much more than around £15-16k?

As the old saying goes, a car is only worth what someone will pay for it.
If certain dealers are selling the cars for upto and some over £20k then those cars are worth that money. Until they sell they are worth nothing. There is an SE in the classifieds up for £32k, is it worth it ? If someone pays that for it, then yes.
Not much help I know. Good choice on returning to the fold though

'is it worth it ?... If someone pays it then yes'.... What tosh!.. how does it make it worth it just coz some idjot pay's it... no.. these things are worth what they are.. market value.. and as they get older and less exist, they will go up in value for sure.. and I want mine to go up so I can at least recover what I've spent on it!!!.. But you have to be realistic... If certain dealers are selling the cars for upto and some over £20k then those cars are worth that money. Until they sell they are worth nothing. If I payed £250K for a house thats worth £150K. does not make it worth any more.. No.. it's still only worth £150K but I've just chucked £100K of my hard earned cash away... Will it ever be worth £250K.. may be... and I may get a chance at getting my dosh back. .. Just my 2p's..

Prices have definatley gone up recently - pleasently suprised when I was told what to expect in return for mine a week or two ago. Didn't help the sinking, horrible feeling in my belly though
If you want a great Griff now you have to pay, if your happy with a 'good' one then yes you can get 'em for £15k.

Think you're coming at this from the wrong angle. There are no more available from TVR
So
They are worth what people will part with one for.
If you won't sell yours for less than £20k...its worth £20k. Or you keep it.
If you want £20k and have to get rid of it...you'll take less. There's always one or two that come up cheap and sell very quickly. For cheap think £10-12k
If you have a 20 year old Rover engined TVR. Its worth about £4k. Unless its a Tuscan, in which case its worth £16k. Why? Because no one will sell for less than that and there's lots that want them.
Thats also why a Griffs worth £16k wheras a Chim is worth £8k
my 2p
I think a lot of 'classic' car values have increased in the past year due to overseas buyers(value of £ to Euro). However I bought my Griff during this period, but only because it was the colour/model choice that I wanted. The Griff is a car that will settle around 12-25k, similar to other desirable cheapish performance cars. Its not a Cobra or DB5, in my opinion it is similar to a TR6 or V12 E Type and like these cars will settle around £12-£16k for the average car £20-£25k for good, well looked after genuine cars.
Buy the car you want for the money you're prepared to part with and enjoy the car happy in the fact that it should'nt depreciate.

"Tosh" you say but if it sells for £32k it's market value is £32k because that's what it sold for on the open maket...
What's tosh?No the Griffith is not a TR6 type car - there were far more TR6s built - about 86,000 I think. TR5 isn't right either and I am sure it will end up more like the Healey 3000 level but maybe higher. The problem is that it's fibreglass and that does hold values back, has no competition history and it uses a non-TVR engine.
On the plus side it's rare, a 5 litre, V8, good looking and there's very little, if any, direct competition. I think values have gone up a bit quickly in the last 12 months, driven largely by Fernies who seem to be able to sell everything they get at whatever price they decide to set, and so we are due a period of consolidation but long-term a Griffith is a good bet to move up substantially in value IMHO.
Look at the ACE Ace with a Bristol engine - £200,000 now. It's rare with a metal (alloy?) body and looks good. I am not saying the Griffith will reach these levels but there's nothing else like it.

Griffiths made the cover of Classic and Sportscar in 2000,
and have been on the cover a few times since, classic cars, classic and sportscars..
Numbers are low (1 Griff for every 32 e-types built)
Looks good, SIMPLE to maintain, most modern ferrari's, what will they be worth in 30 years (IF anybody can still get their electronics to work, vs a daytona)
Very few for sale at any one time. People tend to hang on to them (ie me - 12 years since new)
And the Harry Metcalfe effect, may kick in....
He does still seem to like his very much, so (if of all of Evo's readers) only a couple of dozen extra people think, I'd like one of those...
Very short supply, up go the prices..
Dodgy colour combinations, poor chassis' or 'modified', vs updated excepted.

TR6s, 90k+ produced, vast majority exported to USA with carbs 100bhp+big bumpers ugh!, only about 6000 in UK vs 2300 GriffsOn the plus side it's rare, a 5 litre, V8, good looking and there's very little, if any, direct competition. The Ace has been pulled up by the soaring Cobra values, aided by its competition heritage.
The Griff has lots of similar Buick V8 siblings dressed in glassfibre(Marcos, MG, etc)
I honestly can't see Griff values going skywards, hope I'm wrong, but thats my opinion

Only 14k V12 Es built, most went to the States, around 3k in Blighty similar amount of Griffs 2.3kand have been on the cover a few times since, classic cars, classic and sportscars..

Twice as many Griffs for sale in the classified section compared to V12. My Griff has had 4 owners in 10 years, av ownership 2-3 years, I would suggest that this is fairly typical.
Harry Metcalfe effect may also have a negative effect-last month he pitted his Griff against a MX5, for the average Evo reader the conclusion would be buy a MX5- better MPG + reliability.
Short supply but also limited demand, seem to note a few Griff owners have defected to Astons, due probably to Astons prices coming into the £25-40k bracket.
The Griff is a classic and desirable British sports car, one that will appeal to enthusiasts for years to come as have E Types, TR6s, Healeys etc. I see it as a sensible investment(albeit one that gets well used and enjoyed) but not one that will enter the rarified space of a Muira or Daytona.

But are we actualy seeing some Griff's 'worth' £32K?.... This isn't even a mint one... not in my opinion...''£32k, is it worth it ? If someone pays that for it, then yes.''

There is a band of market values, as you said. The cheapest being the lowest price paid recently and the high end being the most one has sold for recently.
There have been a few SE cars listed at between £27k and £30k in the last few months which have sold pretty quickly, whether they fetched asking price is another matter. However they sold relatively quickly so I wouldn't have thought there was much of a reduction in price.
None of this however really concerns me as I have no intention whatsoever of selling mine for the foreseeable future, hopefully ever

Just going to enjoy using it as it was intended

eta - Of course, the SE Griffs that sold very quickly recently could appear on Fernies site for sale once the grey one goes !! Cornering the market is certainly one way of pushing up prices

Suspicious, Moi ? eta (again) - and IMHO, if that turns out to be the case, there is nothing wrong with that, business is business.
