End float in the diff bearings
Discussion
Your advice is needed.
My wedge failed its MOT today on, amongst other things, end float that is coming from the diff bearings. Sadly thought it was the UJ's but the disc and its carrier move in and out. Gives the same effect as a floppy UJ but it is not the UJ. Is this going to be a diff out and rebuild job or can I cure it with the diff in place? The car is a 1987 390se.

According to my book of words and pictures (mostly on the PowerLok LSD), there are shims behind the bearing housing... but also a distance piece and shim stack between inner and outer bearings. If I understand the cross-section correctly, the shim stack and distance piece would set end-float on the bearings, but not sure what the shims behind the bearing carrier are for. It looks like the bearing carrier unbolts from the side of the diff and pulls off with the output shaft, bearings and seals (do-able on the car, I guess) - but whether it's quite that simple to refit and mesh with the diff side gears I wouldn't like to say
Got to suspect that the bearings are fuackered, though...
