I have £3k to buy a modernish, cheap to run estate and looking at Passat 1.9 TDI 100/130 SE's with around 100k on the clock.

What should I be looking for? Any common faults on these?

My mate bought one a couple of months ago with 220k on it, still going strong.

Turbo, and the fecking interior fan that acts as a swimming bowl. (seal goes and leaks water inside and on the master cylinder)
Turbo/boost solinoid means the car goes into 'safe' mode. normally a cheap fix smile

I have a 1998 1.8T Passat which is abused by being used on short journeys, parked in London for ages not being used etc.

The thing runs like a dream and starts everytime (assuming I disconnect battery as it runs down after a month or so sat idle).

Its on 138k and I recon it will be good for over 200k.

I do change oil and filters at every MOT which helps.

I would assume diesel is even more reliable.
