With hosepipe bans on the way and little sign of rain to fill my new 650L water butt, I was going to throw the hose into it to fill it up whilst I'm still allowed to do so.

However, I dont want to stand around waiting for it to fill so I was wondering, approximatly how long will it take to fill? This way I can just check on it periodically but without the risk of it flooding over whiclt I'm not near.

Its a standard diameter Hozelock garden hose and the water pressure is as good as any I've encountered in a domestic environment.

My guess is 1hr 20mins but I've not based that on anything other than it sounds about right!

I would hope for around 15 litres a minute if you have reasonable pressure

Wait for it to fill 1/4, time it and go back in 3 times that length of time (or just before!)

Alternatively, wait for it to fill 1/8, time it and go back in 7 times that length of time (or just before!)

I should say that the tank is a cylinder, laid on it's side - so waiting for a fraction of a fill and returning at a time based on that could be difficult!

Let it fill twice and then divide by two...

...Oh hang on...

You could measure your flow rate if you have a 1 litre jug or similar:

Time how many seconds it takes to fill the 1 litre jug, eg 4 seconds. Divide the 4 seconds into 3600 seconds (one hour) and that'll give your hourly flow rate. In this case 900LPH.

There is some presidence for doing this as the line in the song by 'Pink' called 'So What?' I distinctly heard her say 'check my flow'. I'm not sure if it is a rapping term or perhaps she's also got a large tank to fill as well. smile

Fill an empty 440ml beercan using the hosepipe on full bore, while operating a stopwatch.
Multiply time taken to fill by 1000/440 x 650 for your answer.
Should leave you enough time to go hang your clothes up to dry.

Easier still, just multiply 4 seconds by 650 litres.

Honestly, sometimes I think the internet saps all initiative!

Yes, you're correct...however part of my job is to measure flow rates in terms of litres per hour, so I was on auto pilot there. smile

Stick a hose in, put a brick on it, retire to the deck chair with a beer, when it overflows turn off the tap.

Kidnap small / large child and tie them up in the tank

When they scream, you know it's nearly full. When they stop, it's full.

(May need to top it up when you let them out).
