Got my new toys yesterday: 50D, vertical grip and 70-200mm f4L bounce
Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 OS is on its way.

First impression: thumbup
I'm happy with shots at ISO 1600 and even 3200 is usable. Previous DSLR (Sony A350) was brilliant at ISO 100, but beyond 200 I just wasn't happy. I only ever got one shot above ISO 400 that I was happy with!

The speed of it is also great. 6+fps is very satisfying hehe, but more importantly once I've pressed the shutter button in single-shot mode, if something interesting is happening I can press it again and it takes the shot with no hesitation.

And the size is nice, fits my big hands much better than the Sony!

Saying all that, I do miss built-in IS and the tilting screen! And live view obviously isn't as good as the Sony, but it's actually better than I was expecting.

Dare I own up to just getting a 450D (which is giving me a little overexposure), or is that just too down market?

Overexposure Fer? Post a shot up with the exif so we can take a looky.

Welcome to the Canon club too though. Started of with my 350D, and still use it!

Don't worry

I also have one which overexposes. Its a pain in the arse.

I always dial in 1 or 2 stops under.

The Alpha 550 would have given you all of that as well as sensor stabilisation, but I do understand that the lure of the big 2 is always there!

The Alpha 550 was almost what I wanted, but not quite.

It was missing:
1) ISO 100 - Which I use 90% of the time for landscape/tripod shots.
2) Micro Focus Adjust - I am a pixel peeper :P
3) Build quality - I can't let drizzle stop me, I live in Scotland.

Also there is a much more active market of used equipment for Canon, and hiring a lens is much easier and cheaper.

If an A700 replacement had come out, then potentially it could have interested me. But it didn't.

I bought a 50D a couple of weeks ago. My first foray into the world of DSLRs, I have to say that I absolutely love it, and I'm enjoying learning how it works and experimenting with it.

Can I join with my S90? Or is it for DSLR owners only?

BTW, mine also over-exposes slighty. I tend to set -2/3 with vivid colour mode for the best exposure and nicest colours smile

Got the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 OS yesterday. First impression is that it's nice and sharp wide open and the OS works well.

Actually speaking of OS, I'm finding I get at least an extra stop without shake when using the 50D, over the Sony A300. I think the extra weight and more comfortable (for me) size makes it more stable smile.

And - My 85mm f/1.8 should be arriving any day now. Can't wait biggrin

The 85mm 1.8 arrived today, and now I know I made the right choice going for the 50D rather than the 550D...

My first impression of the lens was not a good one. It was OK but not sharp wide open like most reviews say it is.
Then I noticed on a test portrait that something was sharp at f/1.8 - a random strand of hair in front of the subject's face!
+10 micro focus adjustment, and what a difference! 100% focus accuracy, sharp wide open and the fastest focusing I've experienced.

Accurate enough? hehe
