Car search 'inflation'

I need help !
Circumstances have changed at home and I need to get rid of my faithful S4 Avant for two replacement cars; one a long distance load lugger and the other a fun runaround city/hatchback thingy for the missus. The load lugger is going to be a diesel Avant but I'm having trouble concentrating on the runaround. Example -
- select small car like a Clio 1.2 & start browsing ads
- decide an old Clio Williams would be more interesting
- fairly soon I'm on the 172
- cup of coffee later I'm in the 'Renaultsport' section trying to work out the difference between a 'Cup' and a 'Cup pack'
- decide that's too complicated so find myself looking at a Clio V6
Anyway to cut a long story short I usually find myself sorting DB9s 'Low to High' to see if I can afford one yet.
Looking to spend around £5K. Prefer 5 door and it needs to be reasonably frugal and fun to drive - outight performance isn't that important ( have the TVR for that). Was looking at Aygos but one small story about problem brakes on these cars had me back in AM section before my bourbon cream was half finished.

Don't know how practical it needs to be, but £5k might get you a smart Roadster. It's small and frugal, but it also a lot of fun and a rwd mid/rear sports car.
I suppose other suggestions would be things like a MINI or a Fiat, think there was a Punto 1.4 turbo that looked pretty neat, Panda might be worth a shout too, or if the smart idea appeals then even a regular ForTwo might be entertaining while fulfilling what you want from it.

Forgot a bit - the missus will be transporting our 2 year old around so that probably rules out the Smart. The Fiats are worth looking at though. MINIs don't do it for me - I know it's not mainly for me but I'll need to drive it now and again and well to me they're a bit, you know...

How about a Panda 100hp...Evo magazine said that it was a fantastic handler and if I remember it beat a Renaultsport Megane and a few others in the road test...I think?!? They also look great...you could always go down the unusual/classic/rare route...Austin 1300/Ford Anglia etc ... best to look at 100hp's i suppose...or a Focus ST170

I've not driven one, but seen one at a dealership. And thought it looked fab for a little hatch.

Yep the Pandas look pretty good - they were mentioned before. Defintely on the list. I'd get strung up if I brought home another 'classic' though. Already got a MG midget and a TVR V8S in 'project' state (one of the reasons I find myself having to lose the S4 )Edited by gifdy on Friday 9th July 21:14

I've not driven a Swift myself, I just like the look of them! Evo had one as a long termer which they liked, although that was the Sport version not the GLX or whatever it was I linked. Obviously, in the best 'inflationary' traditions, the Sport would be the one to buy! And the escalation has to stop at a Vitara which isn't going to happen. No Siree.
