best way to remove engine and gearbox?
Discussion
i need to remove the engine and gearbox from a 92 sierra (donor for kitcar).
now what is the best/easiest way to go about this?
i will drain all the fluids first.
is it best to remove the gearbox first? or all in one?
i don't have an engine hoist, so will i need to get hold of one? or is it possible to drop it through the bottom on a trolley jack?
so any advice?
cheers

1. Get engine hoist
2. Remove propshaft
3. Undo engine mountings & gearbox crossmember
4. Lower gearbox, thereby tilting engine upwards
5. Pull both out forwards and upwards, as a single unit
6. Do all the other incidental stuff at points 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 & 5.5 that I haven't bothered writing down

Undo engine and gearbox mountings, get 3 or 4 big mates to roll car onto its side remove from the underneath.
Actually if its a pinto engined sierra get the biggest toughest engine crane you can because a pinto on its own weighs about half a ton, took 3 of us to get one out of a transit van and onto a sack truck to put it in my shed, the wheels on the sack truck bent to about 45 degrees under the weight. The gearbox is fine, easily carry able by one person.
Edited to add after re-reading your original post drop the box first, then beg/borrow a hoist or make an `A` frame out of scaffold pole and get some good chain to to lift it, I cant over emphasise hoe heavy a pinto is

If you bring it out the top, or from underneath, leave the box on the engine. It'll be heavy, but much less aggro than trying to seperate them. If you lift them out from the top, make sure the front of the car is up on axle stands, so you have room for the back of the gearbox to swing down as the front of the engine lifts up.
another tip of the car is large, the gap small or the engine/gearbox long:
lower the front. Keep the back of the car high, but lowering the front makes the angle bigger and slightly larger (but only bother if its not going to happen eslewhere. And you'll need a few attempts with strapping the engine- you wont get it right first time!

I'd invest in a hoist, frankly. Only 100 quid, and you'll need it at least twice (out of the donor and into the kit), so you're up to 60 quid right there. I've used mine so many times during the build for trial fits etc that I'd have spent many times that on hiring one. Also useful for lifting the car on and off of trestles.
