Can't they come up with any ideas of their own? The whole country has been turned into some sort of phone-in reality show.

Exactly. I thought the idea of government was to make decisions on behalf of the people. Some difficult. The new government doesn't want to do that without a get-out clause of 'well you told us too....' when it goes tits up.

The idea of asking for ideas is one idea they had.

As for governments knowing what to do, if the last 13 years haven't dispelled that myth it's difficult to know what will. The coalition seem to realise that if they keep government small it will cost less meddle less and screw up less, that's a good idea.

If you were to look back through all the government policy discussions on here, one of the most repeated themes, would be the constant suggestion of alternative ideas to those chosen by the former supreme leader and his war criminal predecessor . . . . . . . . I think it’s a great idea that after 13 years of what was essentially dictatorship, where the ideas and opinion of the people had been almost completely ignored, we now have a government that seemingly wants to listen, and the true test will of course be if they act on the suggestions!

My prediction is that there will be huge numbers and variations of the following cash saving / generating ideas:

Tax banks / the more well off, after all it’s all their fault (if you believe everything winky & co told you)
Get out of Afghanistan (can’t see a downside to that one)
Reduce international aid (see above!)
Don’t replace trident (could have been a good way of supporting several industries)
Charge 10p a time to kick labour voters in the genitals (a good way of making up for their 13 years of st!)
Reduce our financial commitments to the EU (can of worms!)
Scrap MP / Peer expenses (flat rate income rise for MP's, Lords is an honour, if you don’t want to donate your time, don’t sit in the house)
Tax the wealthy (red top readers won’t understand why that’s a bad idea and it will be repeated ad nauseam)

Going on the website and selecting the most popular ideas option, there seems to be a good one on NHS / defence (etc) procurement, if what the contributor says about the current position is true, anybody quoting paperclips as an indicative additional PS cost beyond salaries might like to take a look.
