I've been reliably informed by the mrs that we are having a picnic tomorrow, "somewhere near the sea."

So, can anyone on the south coast (or elsewhere) recommend a good beach somewhere in between Bognor & Weymouth?

She's touted Highcliffe in Christchurch, based upon a visit 20 years ago, but I've never been - what's it like?

I really don't fancy a 2-mile trek from the car park, nor a chav-fest wading through discarded chip wrappers.

Thanks in advance.

I'd avoid Bournemouth beach. It'll be heaving.

Studland might be a nice place to take the missus...

Yeah, I reckon both Bournemouth & Poole beaches to be out.

Never been to the beach at Studland.

Thanks.

Studland will be heaving to plus there will be traffic jams to the ferry. What about Boscombe or somewhere near Christchurch, Mudeford or Hengistbury head? Anywhere there that's any good?

West Wittering turn off the A27 at Chichester to The Witterings, lovely beach and sandunes and a very good car park on grass.

The Beach Polo is on at Sandbanks this weekend. It's going to be murder!

Beachlands at Hayling Island. Aim for PO11 0AS, then walk westwards along the beach. At anything other than high tide, there's acres of sand.

Studland would fit the bill. You don't have to get the ferry, but it is a fair bit further round via Wareham. Southbourne end of Bournemouth is also less busy. However, depending on how you intend to get home, if you are using the A31/M27/M3 then you will probably be sitting in a massive traffic jam going back from the Bournemouth/Poole/Christchurch area at the end of the day... but then the best beaches are in that area!

Highcliffe is more unspoilt - less facilities but a less 'sandy' beach. The beach is typically smaller in depth with more rocks, but can be nice.

Absolutely +1 - as long as the tide is out!

As above, Highcliffe is quite a stony beach.

I used to live in the Southbourne area of Bournemouth (east of Bournemouth-Boscomber, towards Hengistbury Head).
The beach there isn't as stupidly busy as Bournemouth's main drag, and it's quite easy to park in the residential streets on the clifftop. A few minutes trudge down the zig-zag path from the clifftop and you've a superb beach!
