I have just put a deposit on a car (private sale) and this was 3 days after the owner had handed the log book and MOT into local dvla office to get the private plate transferred off the car, the owner has said the log book and MOT should be returned within 7 days (acording to what he was told by dvla) but a friend of mine says I should expect it to take 2 or 3 weeks.

Is there a way of speeding the proccess up or is there a way I can complete the purchase and take the car without the log book and MOT present? My mate said something about getting a form from the post office?? Is this true?

Yes, just have the vendor send the V5 back to the DVLA as soon as it arrives, a quick use of the search function will show you dozens of posts on the same subject, including a run down of the rough time taken for each phase of a plate transfer.

Sorry I know there is no thread title, posted from my iPhone and although I did put a title it has not displayed it???

Is it really ok to purchase a car without the log book present??

I will have to have a proper search and read on here tomorrow when on my pc, is hard using my phone, too much info on here and not enough space to read.

Also tried to add a thread title btw but it won't let me add one, sorry.

Depends how straight you think the vendor is.

I was selling a car with a private plate recently and didn't have the V5 when the new owner bought the car. I had, however, taken a photocopy of the V5 before leaving it with the local DVLA office so all was considered fine by the purchaser.

Surprised no copy of V5 was available.

Denis O, i forgot to say that the vendor has supplied me with a copy of the V5 via email and you couldnt find a straighter seller if you tried. I have absolutely no reason to not trust the vendor in any way, i just dont want to be waiting around for summer to end before i pick up my first ever convertible!

So is my friend wrong to say there is a form in the post office that i could get and send to DVLA when buying a car without v5 present? Is there not a procedure in place for buying a car with no v5 present? Or is the procedure simply to not buy until it is present?
