Transformation !!!!!

Just got my car back at long last, from the garage. While there it has had two new .3 bar actuators fitted, slave cylinder replaced and the most impressive bit of break work done so far. SWLC have just purchased a machine for skimming the discs on the car. My car, since I purchased it almost two years ago, has had a problem with vibration under heavy breaking. I’ve tried cleaning the discs, replacing the discs, changing pads, all to no avail. Someone mentioned getting the discs skimmed on the car, but couldn’t find anyone who had the facility. If anyone has this problem, get your discs skimmed on the car, what a difference. Before under heavy braking it felt like brake-fade when it started to vibrate, but know heavy braking and no vibration. It has made a world of difference to the general driving experence , and with the engine know rebuilt with the fresh actuators and Trevors remap, its running like a dream. Now, just got all my Pro-alloy bits to fit

For reference, who skimmed your disks? I have had the rears done on my M400 numerous times and still have an uneven braking force (slight warp?). Having recently replaced the fronts with the grooved discs I can't face another £1k bill to replace the rears. Any other advice on uneven braking (potential causes) would be much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

South West Lotus Centre down here in Devon did mine, spoke to James today and he was saying that it only takes around 1-1.5 hrs to do. Good excuse for a trip down to Devon/Cornwall, if one is needed

Runout on the face of the hubs is the most probable cause, the easiest and most cost effective way is to have them skimmed on the car. I had mine done in Brentwood which might not be too far from you at a cost of £40 approx per disc.

Conveniently I am popping down to Devon in a couple of weeks (coincidence of course) so may book it in. The discs look to have a bit of depth in them so a skim should not be an issue.

Hey guys,


Had the same prob with my 400 and it was a severe shudder from the front and back, After reading on a ph thread funksters blight I followed his advice and had the front and back skimmed on the car,It solved the problem completly and cost £188incl vat for the 4 wheels, the company is called Mercury car centre and based in Brentwood in essex would recomend them.

It took nearly 3 hours they are very precise.

Mark, make sure you get the new fronts done at the same time as they are probably as far out as the rears.

if there is runout on the face of the hubs - surely its best to get the hubs skimmed and the problem is fixed once and for all

otherwise everytime you fit new discs the problem will come back !

If you do have your disks skimmed on the car, be sure to mark the rotor and hub, so if you ever take them apart, you can put them back in the same place...

Tried this Gadge,
Its not the face of the hub thats the problem but the bearing seat on the stub. If the hubs could be machined on the car then I'd say yes but a quality machine shop faced mine and then when you press them back into the bearing they run out again.

Best option is to fit standard ford stubs with ford size bearing.

Cheapest option that worked purfect for me was to have all 4 discs skimmed on the car.
Thats after...

Skim discs (off car)
New discs
Skim Hubs
New hubs from Noble (as bad as the originals)
Oh and 4 lots of bearings in between.

Does c.£188 for four discs include the removal and re-fitting of the discs? Seems pretty good value... Also, if the rears are slightly out is this likely to cause the new front discs to wear to a similar profile?

Does c.£188 for four discs include the removal and re-fitting of the discs? Seems pretty good value... Also, if the rears are slightly out is this likely to cause the new front discs to wear to a similar profile?

The discs are skimmed on the car so no removal and refit are required.. they do remove the wheels and the calipers though which do need removing.

i know there is an uprated stub axle for sale in the usa

this is recommended if you go racing - would this fix the problem

No, I already have them fitted, They replace the standard giant allen bolt with a proper splined bolt.
