I've had a few issues with the X5. It just doesn't seem right. It's noisey and isn't a smooth ride. I've taken it to 2 BMW specialists, and they say there's nothing wrong with it. The last guy said it may be due to the tyres "going off" ie, they could be a year to 18 months old. They have plenty of tread on them, in fact the back ones look pretty new. Given the cost of them here (Dubai)I'd be gutted of I replaced them and it made no difference.

Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Many thanks.

Tyres can go off AFAIK, but shouldn't really in the period you're talking about - unless the extra heat affects them more - they must go through a hell of a lot of heat cycles.

Sometimes tyres are just plain faulty. Could you borrow a pair of rims from another X5 to try them?

I've had two sets of tyres less than a year old which went wrong - OE fit Yokohama A10A on my Lancer which had the tread splitting (date code for the tyre was 9 months previous to having to get them replaced), and bad sidewalls on 6 month old Goodyear Eagle NCT5 (bad batch).

What size wheels are fitted to your car? Are they BMW or aftermarket?

What are you comparing the noise/ride with?

Loads of people fit huge wheels to X5's. The sidewall of tyres fitted to these large wheels tend to be smaller and harder than the sidewalls of tyres which are fitted to smaller wheels (basically, the circumference in either case is very similar, it's just that the bigger wheels are more "solid" and reduce ride comfort).

The result is that the bigger the wheel, the worse the ride is.

Noise is also often impacted - bigger wheels = more noise.

Interesting from the poster above. I also had a set of eagle gsd03's have sidewalls fail. They were replaced FOC.

Thanks for that gents.
The wheels are normal for the model (4.8is)...All I can tell you is that they are 315's on the rear, and I think 265 on the front. They're pretty low profile though. Put it this way, I'd prefer to take the Mrs's Prada out than mine..It feels like a Bentley in comparison!

Are they ru(i)nflats by any chance? If so I'm not in the least surprised.

You were lucky, these were OE fit to a Vectra. Had to put on my own new tyres, get the duds sent off and wait over a year for a refund.

That's a bloody good point. I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and replace, aren't I?

Runflats are fitted to basically every modern BMW now. They don't have the ride quality of non-runflat tyres but I suppose they have their place (plenty of BMWs spend life at 150mph on Autobahns - runflats make a lot of sense in that situation!).

If you want something that rides well, ditch the bling and get something with proper sidewalls.

I had a similar situation on a previous Disc. I was convinced it was a worn propshaft or another transmission issue. It turned that a couple of the tyres were out of shape. New set cured the problem. However they were a bit older than the OP's. They were also proper full size 4x4 tyres so I guess the side walls must have weakened over time.

I do not believe that the E53 X5, which yours is if it is 4.8iS, were fitted with run flat tyres, but am happy to be corrected.

With the exception being the M-cars. And for the reason you stated!

Just checked the dates on my tyres....They range from 1108 to 2106! New tyres then.

Thanks again for all the input.

Why's that then?

Tyres can go out of round if the car sits for a while. They sometimes sort themselves out if you go for a long drive. Otherwise they'll need changing. Hth

Just to chime in, 315 are mahoosive - I have a BMW, not n X5 but still, I had 245's on the rear and went to 295 with the result that road noise increased dramtically and fuel economy suffered considerably too. I'd look for a slimmer size if I were you, 315 are a bit overkill even on an X5

But they're standard sizes out of the factory.
