Anyone noticed the number of car owners who drive around with one mit hanging over, or onto the top of the steering wheel?
There was a posting on here some while back, where several posters referred to this practice as the cripplehook driving style.
It would seem that the description is quite accurate, not only because the ones who do it, seem to be at the sloppy end of the driving skill spectrum, but perhaps more importantly, many cars are now fitted with steering wheel airbags.
If anyone has experienced an airbag going off in their face, they will know it is not fun, its not like hitting a fluffy pillow with your face!
But where people use the cripplehook driving style they will also enjoy the experience of having their arm fired into their face at a speed approaching 160mph if teh airbag goes off.
Not only will this tend to destroy the face, it will also tend to break the drivers arm in several places, as the airbag tries to mould itself (and the drivers arm) around the drivers skull.
I have been guilty of using the cripplehook at times, but probably wont be any more.
Worth thinking about?

You're also assuming that people won't move their arms in the build up to a crash.

Not for me, I usually steer with my knees and maybe a thumb so it's not too much of an issue wink

They may move their arms they may not, but having an arm between your face, and exploding airbag doesnt seem all that bright.

It's a bit like all of the cars you see driving down the motorway, where the passenegr is laying back in the seat with their feet on the dashboard.....

Where do they think their feet will end up if the passenger airbag goes off...... Wrapped around their own neck I would imagine

Yes, and if, in the seconds before an accident, I were to use my horn (as one might, to warn of an impending collision), and if the airbag were then to go off, it would snap my thumbs clean off, and fire them straight into my eyes, where they would presumably shatter my eye sockets, and embed themselves deep into my brain, if not staple me to the headrest.

That's going to hurt when I'm steering with my teeth right enough....

Seriously though, on a long trip I think my hands will be at every position on the steering wheel at some point. It gets pretty uncomfortable to keep hands in the same position.

It isn't uncommon for me to drive with my hand at the top of the wheel and can't say I drive any different than usual in that position. A bad driver is still a bad driver wherever their hands are on the wheel and vice versa.

Out of interest, when you turn the wheel do you ALWAYS shuffle it rather than crossing your hands? If you EVER cross your hands you're putting your arms between your face and a potentially exploding airbag - how can you POSSIBLY take that risk? Are you mad?

This.

I usually change my position on the wheel quite alot, sometimes I've one hand.. Both hands, thumbs, on top, on the bottom.. Thats on long journeys really, normal driving I'll usually use right hand on the side of the wheel and one by the gearstick.

Not perfect but comfortable.

Ewenem, Yes I do sometimes take the risk, of having my arm across the steering wheel, but it is a considered risk, so I can live with it. But at least I dont drive the cripplehook style, so there is a plus to it.

No. Mit? Do you mean hand?

What? really? Steering wheel airbags? Are you from the past?

Tell you what, I hope no one ever uses the 'Racing driver', 3/15 position on the road, otherwise, they're moulded to their airbag if they're smacked going around a corner.

I think they will move their hands in an accident. As long as drivers are safe and aware I don't care where their hands are on the wheel if I'm honest.

In all seriousness, you are more likely to bump into someone as you check the positions of drivers hands in passing cars instead of looking where you are going wink

I'm more concerned about the women who sit 3 inches from the steering wheel at face level, if the bag goes off it will blow their bloody head off!

It's all part of the gangsta-lean chav style driving round my way. And I'm not talking old Corsa B's either. I live in an area populated by wealthy chavs in RRS/Cayennes/Mercs etc. and they are all posers in whatever media-influenced way they think makes other people know that they're special.

All goes with the rest of the crap we read about such as not using seatbelts, parking on yellows/disabled/parent spaces, blocking pavements and so on.

All scum, all the time. Karma will reward the righteous and sensible thinking driver though so relax!

No it doesn't. The bag moulds itself to their face, trapping their arm, sometimes - Oh and teeth, let's not forget teeth.

Because everyone with a pricey car is a chav/scum, unless they're you (in a pricey area) that lives right by them and drives a...?
