Hi

I've just sold my 430, and am now contemplating what to get next.

The 430 was a bit too soft for me, and i didnt like it much on track. I've the friendly dealer trying to persuade me to look at the Scuderia (£130k0ish), but I'm wondering if they can possibly change it enough from the 430 to merit buying it.

The other options are the Superleggera, of which there are a couple around the £100k mark, as I'm not buying new. Still havent been hearing great things about reliability and I'm not a massive fan of the e-gear. Still would love to hear how any owners rate them, especially on track?

The other options i can see are an R8 (which ive driven an have heard nothing but good things about) and the 911 Gt3.

Any experiences, driving or ownership would be hugely appreciated

Cheers

Andy

I would honestly try a 997 GT2 or if you want a new car, try a 997 GT3 RS Generation 2 model and tick the box on the options list that allows you to pick the car up from the factory.

GT3 RS Gen 2 would be great fun on the road and track, rare, very reliable and sounds great with the standard titanium exhaust. GT2 on the other hand, is more of a road car but packs a bigger punch, and the performance will shock you in comparison with a 430.

Hi Andy,

I've had a Superleggera, I've currently got a 430 and my mother has an R8.
If you thought the 430 is too soft the R8 is not the car for you. I really enjoyed the Superleggera though, if you can get yourself a drive in one you should try it. I would have another for sure.

I've owned both the Superleggera and the Scuderia

The Scuderia is a much better car (but then what else would you expect as it is both newer and more expensive)

IMO the SL still looks better (and if you dont want e-gear gives you a manual option - although there are not many non-egear cars in the UK)

When I owned both I used to normally drive the SL in the wet and the Scuderia in the dry - which tells you something about the handling differences

I had a Superlegera but when i get back in I will get a 360 CS. They seem depreciation proof and do all the things you need.

Saying that I wouldn't drive one every day and I did the lambo...

Ive had both SL and scud. As Trax says the Scud is a much better car. The SL was just a mildly tuned gallardo imo.

Have driven the Scud, Superleggera and currently run a 997 GT3. On the road, the Scud is probably the better car for the sheer sense of occasion and combination of acceleration, noise, racing style interior etc. Even the rev / shift lights on the wheel just make driving more of a pleasure and it is brutally quick. On the track it is excellent too but if you do a lot of track days, I would opt for a GT3 instead so that you don't have huge repair bills everytime something pops off or goes bang. I also liked the SL but I thought the interior wasn't that great (as per all lambo's) and I drive my cars every day and wouldn't want to own something that was such a liability! I know since Audi took them over they are better but you will still get a Lambo sized repair bill rather than an Audi sized version!

Haven't driven the R8 V10, I can't imagine ever wanting one although they do look pretty. for what its worth my recommendation would be to go as prev mentioned in the thread, the Gen2 997 RS. Or maybe a GT2RS if you can find the sponds / availability.

White with gold wheels/decals, thanks very much!

Some really useful takes on this guys.

i had actually considered a GT2, as I suspect its something of an unrecognised gem currently.

Very interesting chat about the GT3 also. I really fancy one, but it doesnt have much presence, and the RS is to extreme although I'll hopefully have a hot of a new GT3 RS in a few weeks (i have an Elise Race Car and 340R for track also).

Lp640 - just too big. Road car wise epic. Pondering.

Please keep the feedback coming, as its really useful and very much appreciated.

The scud drives well and the gearbox is excellent. It is quite loud in the cabin and feels very raw, depends what you want to use the car for - soaking up long journeys with a passenger is something it is not built for. I'd take one as an additional car. The SL is good value at 100k in my opinion, but 4wd isn't for me. The 997 GT2 could be a good call, how about the new GT3RS, they do very well on track. Or an LP550-2? I tried quite a few, V12 Vantage, Scud, LP550-2 and took the lambo. I wanted manual and tried every effort to get the car in manual, even asked the factory to swap the egear out for the manual box but they wouldn't - but now, for a road car I quite like the egear - plus the lambo is very luxurious inside versus the scud - and why shouldn't it be, you are paying a lot for it! Good luck whatever you decide, all good cars - best way to decide, drive them all.

Not the best for track days mind, but seems to be some what of a bargain at that price.

A chance to own some Jaguar history, and may prove to be more valuable now that Jaguar are up and coming.

I've owned both 997 GT2 and 430 Scuderia.

The Ferrari is the better car IMHO.

Mainly because of the F1 Superfast gearbox as opposed to manual, but also because of its greater ambience and sense of occasion each time I drive it.

Good luck with the decision.

the XJ220 idea was an amusing one! A total fantasy car when i was a kid, but dont fancy a left hooker.

Sounds like the scud is ahead on points, but tbh, i havent been hugely impressed with Ferrari's build or paint quality during my 430 ownership. Will definately have a chat and sort out a drive.

The GT2 is appealing more and more though. Rare, understated, and means i can tick the 911 box (in style). Like the fact that it isnt as raw as the GT3 RS as my other half just wouldnt get the roll cage.

Tough decisions :0)

Thanks again for all the advice. Hoping to see a Superleggera on Tuesday, so will have a good chance to see it and have a good look round it.

Any more ideas or experiences please dont be shy!

I didn't like the fixed backrest in the SL. If you and tall and you want to track it, you'll find it difficult to fit with a helmet.

If you do find that you have some spare cash in your back pocket, you could always just put your name down for the latest GT2 RS.

well, test drove a GT3 and loved it.

Had a look at a Superleg yesterday, and with the helmet comment, and I'm only 6ft.

There was a stunning GT2 there also........... decisions, decisions.

Andy,
For that kind of money, would you not consider buying two cars?
I am just a bit taller than 6ft and the 996 GT2 feels perfect - £50,000 would buy you a 2002-03 996 GT2 (Clubsport Spec) with around 30,000 miles.
Then for another £60,000 you can bag yourself a 996 GT3 RS which is said to be the most hardcore Porsche.
Or
Go for the 996 GT3 (not the RS) for about £40k, and get yourself a 360 Challenge Stradale for about £90k.

good points, but I've already got 4 cars, so not really wanting another couple!

I've a mate with a CS, and another with a 996gt3rs which be all accounts is epic but i hate the look of it.

Dilema continues, although may be a nice 997 gt3 rs just come up.

Still, just saw a Gallardo Balboni go past on the way to the office - epic..........bks - totally lost now!

This has done the auction rounds and been through 5 dealers in the last 4-5 years.

Its one of the fast masters race cars that was mullered for espn in the 1990s.

Thats why its so cheep!
