I reckon they only did it to flush out the under-the-mattress brigade. Changed £440 today, no stright swap, if you want the cash you have to put it into an account and then draw it out. "There has to be a trail" She says.

So you have to put the money into your account, then take it back out, so they can take the old notes from you?

I've seen the signs in Tesco that they're removing them from the system, surely if you have lots of savings (I know my sister has been saving, she's got about £800 in a tin now) then what, the notes will be invalid if she doesn't change them up?

Maybe they found out it was easy to forge?

The notes are always valid with the Bank of England. She won't be able to spend them in shops though, she'd have to change them at a bank.

Probably that someone forged an enormous batch of them. Only reliable way to get them out of circulation.

Wait until they go out of circulation then they will be worth £25 to collectors for rarity value. wink

Recently the Post Office gave a family member £100 in forged 20's, which was nice of them

So have they decided who is going to be on the new £20 yet?

How about David Beckham in face-palm pose at the World Cup or one of the other modern "icons" like his walking stick of a wife, an icon for the anorexics of the world. Cheryl Cole for her bravery in combating Malaria (I bet she won't be going back to help the natives again), perhaps St. Gazza of Newcastle Brown complete with dressing gown, chicken and lager to help heal the suffering? Or perhaps one of Raoul Moat himself in memory for all the fat necked psychos in the UK?

Personally, I think it's time for Churchill to appear on the note. I think we have a good photo to use too.

Adam Smith. The new notes have been around since 2007.

What nonsense, the ending of the gold standard was why we came out of the great depression years before the US.

Money is useful because it's more efficient than bartering. There's no reason why it should hold any particular value.

I think Scott Alexander should be the face of the next £20 notes.

We could always go with regional money, using famous people from the local area. Like they have done in Totnes, the currency can only be used in the town thus spent on local services.

Here's an idea for one part of London.

Yeah, they don't generally take the old notes away until the new ones are available wink
