I've been looking at buying a Freelander for my wife. It's only intended to be a cheap second car and something to carry the beach things and bikes. I've seen one locally that's a 2002, 1.8 , well maintanied and has had the head gasket done BUT does that really mean anything? I read all the stories of the head gasket failures but I don't see anything to suggest that the head gasket change won't prevent it from happening again.

Should I consider a TD4 instead?
