BMW 330d Engine cutting out!

2000 E46 330d engine cutting out!
Hi all, This is my first post on here so here we go.
The car has been in the family from new, Its been main stealer serviced and well looked after. Its done approx 120k.
My troubles first showed up a few weeks ago when I was driving the car reasonably hard, the glow plug light came up and the power dropped immediately..no smoke no noises. I was able to clear it by switching off the ignition and it allowed me to drive on sensibly with no fault. If I demanded power however, say going up hill or overtaking it would cut out again.(limp home). The problem now seems to have come further down the power/rev range to the point its barely driveable! Now if I persist resetting it when the light comes on eventually the engine will go into limp followed by completely stalling
As I said its got worse. Worth pointing out that the car starts fine every time and ticks over nicely, Will even rev up well when just sitting. I was told the low pressure pump under the car would be most likely but changing it has made no improvement. Snap on modus has shown fault something like "low fuel rail pressure" Ive read lots of other posts but some comments on my particular symptoms would be very helpfull please!! Many others seem to have starting troubles whereas I dont..Could it be possible that this fault may show as result of another component giving duff info, leaky vacuum pipes or maf etc?...HELP!
