Tyre size confusion. . . . .

HELP!
I have just been given a Dawes Super Galaxy, it has been sat in a garage for 5 years so will benefit from a quick clean and a service. It looks as if it was built in the mid-90's but could be a little earlier, it has some quite quirky features like gear changers on the end of the handlebars!
After being sat for 5 years the tyres have had it so need replacing, the only marking on the tyres are 28 x 1 1/4 x 1 3/4. My question is; what is the equivlient sized tyre in 'new money'? I have had a quick surf but cannot turn up an answer, anyone out there know what size I need?
