Just doing some googlage on how much tyres will cost down the line when they need doing. I'm well impressed with the level of grip afforded by the OEM 205/45/17 Potenza RE050s - but by christ they are well expensive!! I miss having Toyos in 15" for £40 a pop

Try Falken 452 or 912, or Goodyear F1 Asymmetric, all great tyres, all less than £130 per corner.

Yeah I had 452s on the GTV and Boxster - good tyre. Funny as blackcircles and mytyres don't list the 452 in that size, only the 912. Isn't the 912 a more 'touring'-y type tyre? T1Rs are still coming in at £100. A TON FFS! Damn my 17 inch wheels

Dunno if this is useful for MX-5's, but the OEM tyres for my car are 205/45/17. However, 215/40/17's tend to be cheaper for some reason - Yoko Parada Spec 2's (which are great on the Mini) are about £70 in this size.

As above.. i had the same potenzas on my MPS.. replaced with FK452s in the wider (cant remember if it was 215 or 225) for half the price...
The Falkens definately gripped better, but had softer sidewalls. although on a light car like the MX5 wont be such an issue.

Ah cheers for the tips on the 215s. Have done some searching on MX-5.com (a more Mk3 orientated forum) and it seems quite a few have changed to that size. Jobs a good 'un

In the Max5 race series we run Federal rsr 595's They are a road legal road based tyre with good wet weather/dry grip. We can supply them in 215/45/17 for £105 a corner. Worth a look!!

Youll probably find, unless you go thru standing water, cut-slicks still grip better than normal tyres...
wouldnt want to take it on ste UK motorways tho lol

kumho ku31's, alot of elise drivers swear by them, decent grip, good feedback, predictable in the wet, and their cheap!

I have T1-Rs on my '5 in 205/45/17.
Paid £80 each a few months back as I recall, plus fitting - which was £8 a tyre.

I fitted Kumho KU31 to the Cooper S and they're absolutely brilliant. So good in fact that I'm going to be getting a set fitted to the Golf GTi on Saturday - £360 fitted in 225/40 18 is a billy bargain
