Petrol filler cap (Fiat punto)

silly issue here but...I cannot seem to get my the petrol filler cap to lock on the 98 fiat punto i have.

it screws on, clicks round and round when turned right, and undoes when turned left. I put the key in and turn the key left...nothing (it stops at about 1/4 turn, turn it right, the cap just continues to click round. What is the deal here?

I'll tell you what the problem is, stupid Fiat engineers that think they need to make something clever. Mine sounds like the same stupid system that sometimes needs several attempts to get locked. The instruction manual states it simply enough, turn cap clockwise until it clicks then turn key 1/4 turn clockwise. It works, rarely first time though.

So i turn it right till it clicks...

then i turn the key left 1/4...

...but then i can't pull the key out. (without turning it back to the right...so it remains unlocked) pfft...

any other ideas? (before purchasing another)

Forget left and right, we're talking clockwise and anticlockwise here. Now read my post again.
