Hi all,

My 5 seems to get very warm from heat coming through the transmission tunnel. Unfortunately, this can mean it is raining outside but I'm getting too hot with the roof up. I try to drive with the roof down when possible of course! The air blowers just seem to blow warm air, even on the coldest setting. I do not have AC...

Is this normal? Or is this something that arises over time due to insulation breaking down. The car is a 2000 m/y mk 2.

Thx for any help

This is most likely because your gear shift boots have perished.

Get yourself replacements, and change the little bit of oil in the resevoir too, and it will be much cooler. smile

I get the same problem, have been recommended to change my gearbox oil, plus the turret oil and shift boots which should help keep things cooler apparently.

I've bought the top boot and nylon cup, is there a fitting guide for them, or is it just a matter of lifting out the center console and working my way down? (Quiet down the back!)

Yup! Just work your way down, no nasty surprises, that I can remember anyway. Something to suck out the old turret oil is handy (about 90cc IIRC) an old turkey baster will do it.
Makes quite a difference to the amount of heat that creeps through gear stick.

The intake pipe for your heater matrix may have popped off too. So the heater only draws in air from the cabin as opposed to outside. Worth a check if the heater only blows warm air in. Said pipe is just behind the glovebox

Chances are, if the top boot needs replacing then so does the lower boot. They aren't expensive anyway so why no just do both at the same time?

How difficult a job is it to replace shift boots? Could I manage it with just a set of sockets, or would I need to put it on axle stands etc?

It's all done inside the cabin and it's very easy to do.

Not sure that's the problem in this case though. They all do get a warm transmission tunnel, that's one of the joys of a car with the exhaust running through the transmission tunnel. If the heat-shields have been removed at any point this would probably make it worse...

I've noticed this with mine as well, but just thought as Lazza said that it's just a characteristic of a little rwd car.

So what's normal, and how hot is too hot and requiring the boots to be changed?

I changed my boots at the weekend, before I did this the gear stick got very hot, but now there is no difference in temperature from a cold start smile

Also don't be shocked if there isn't much left of the current boots wink

This is a good topic.

My transmission gets hot, and the gear shift can be notchy. I'm going to order a Gearlever Shift Boot Package thats consists of 1 x Genuine Mazda Upper Shift Boot, 1 x Genuine Mazda Lower Shift Boot and 1 x Genuine Mazda Gearlever Nylon Cup and see if it makes a difference.

2 shift boots!!!

I don't think the shift boots will make much of a difference to the transmission tunnel heat but it should help the gear change and gear stick temperature.

also change the nylon cup and the oil in the shifter mechanism, that'll help with the notchy shift

That's better hehe

You'll need 90cc of oil for the turret (after removing any old stuff that's left in there). Any oil will do, it doesn't need to be gear oil as it's only to lubricate the linkage and doesn't mix with the gear oil.

The 6-speed uses the same shift boots but doesn't need the oil as it is lubricated internally using the gearbox oil - actually makes the lower shift boot more important to keep the gear oil clean wink

My MK1 does this too - the tunnel is almost too hot to touch at times. I'll be getting the boot kit ordered too and testing out my diy skills / bodging ability. It will be nice to have a bit of a slicker gear change too.

Would it be the heat shield under the gear lever area that might be missing?

Hmm.. Mine doesn't seem to blow much cold air, will check that!
