I can't be alone in shunning "social networking" sites, am I?

Apart from keeping in touch with people you may not ordinarily see very often, I can't really see the point. Anyone who means anything to me, I keep in contact with them anyways - why would I want to share the minutae with an audience?

+1. To me they seem to create more problems than they're worth. Also I prefer to talk to real people rather than "cyber mates"

Do you know everyone on Pistonheads...?

Facebook is good for contacting people whilst out and about, ie if you are on your Iphone (like I am right now)

Also good for keeping in contact with people you don't see very often and putting pics up for people to see what you've been doing. If you don't want to broadcast your news then don't post it up, simples.

It's just a tool. How a tool is used and how competent the user is defines how useful they find that tool.

Yes, there is something quite desperately sad about them. Announcing to the world what you are up to right now, whether it is having sex or just a sandwich. As if the world cares.

But mobile phones are no better, "HELLO? YES, YES, I'M ON THE TRAIN!"

You can't check out vast numbers of hot birds without Facebook. It's all about keeping your options open you see.

I hated the idea at first, but now i'm a fully fledged 'facebooker'

I ignore people I geniunely don't like. I find it very useful as a tool to share photos between family and friends, and also quite useful to 'buzz' people with quick questions on the chat tool (rather than MSN)

It depends on the person, I use it as a tool, not really as social networking, although it naturally has an element of that in it regardless.

Then again, i'm one of the few people on this earth that doesn't own a mobile phone.

A sandwich should never be 'just a sandwich'. If it is, it's a crime against humanity.

I have family in England and parts of australia, so facebook makes it easier to speak to them its cheaper than ringing them, quicker than writing to them and i get to see pictures of my family around the globe.
Like all things it has its uses.

i am from a "tech" background I guess, being an internet user since the late 1990 and having been employed to "make web pages" before internet explorer existed, i have never fully got things like facebook and linkedin (and dont even start me on twitter) however i have started to learn their uses.

Over the years i have developed into a niche sector and have compressed that even more by where i live, and as such when looking for new roles have learnt that all these sites (well, not tttewr) are in many ways more important to finding your next $$ paying role than a job post on jobserve.com or the like.

Sales people love them, but the rest of us need to put up with them.

Facebook is a fantastic tool if you use it properly. I'm a teacher primarily, but am a gigging musician musician too. I've lost count of the number of musician mates I've added after gigs, it's great for building a communication network. I've gigged and toured in Italy, France and soon to be Spain due to Facebook and Myspace. My band is building up a following and regularly gets gigs on Facebook. We played at the Eden Sessions back in June - entirely down to Facebook. I even ended up playing my saxophone in Bad Manners, alongside Buster Bloodvessel due to Myspace! So it can be a great business tool.
A lot of my mates when they refer to email, actually mean FB - it's simple, easy and tied to your account, so no fiddly addresses to remember. It's also the new "can I have your number"... I wouldn't be seeing the lovely girl I am at the moment were it not for Facebook!

So yep, I'm a convert!

I was approached, interviewed and won a 6-month contract after an agency saw my profile on LinkedIn. It has it's uses. smile

No, you're quite right.

All facebook users are desperately lonely and insecure types who 'only use to keep in touch with mates'. This allows them to have 250 pretend mates instead of a few real ones.

Oh, and they're all paedo's who use it groom schoolgirls as well. It's Match.com for people too afraid to go on a date with a swamp donkey. wink
