Hi all!

What a cracking event the Classic was this year!!

Which cars did you take, which ones went wrong and what was the fault?

We took a Ferrari 348, TVR Wedge, Porsche 996 Turbo S (Tuned to 570bhp), Honda S2000 and Seat Leon Cupra.

The Ferrari decided it would try to eat the road and as a result a hole appeared in the nearside radiator. The replacement Astra Diesel was no fun - luckily the 348 was fixed and ready for collection the next day.

The Seat had a coil pack issue but after a trip to a local VW/Skoda dealership and 41 Euros later it was back on the road, good as new.

The TVR had an injector problem and was running on about 7.5 cylinders which meant uphill speeds were limited to 40mph...great. A friendly RAC man found the fault after we's spent considerable time checking the usual suspects - plugs, leads, distributer etc.

So 3 out of 5 had issues...can anybody beat that?

I noticed quite a few cars having over heating problems, from E-types, triumphs and even ferrari 355. The triumphs seemed to suffer from fuel vaporization because of the heat.
My 355 spider preformed impeccably as usual and never missed a beat. Just had the air con re gassed and man was that a blessing smile I felt sorry for the guys who drove all that way and out and about with out A/C.

Just a starter motor issue that hindered the Sierra tbh. She was running rather lean at cruise going by the wideband....but as a result we returned some excellent mpg considering the engine spec  The cams were rattling in the head alittle but this was only an annoyance at idle.

FastRich,

You wouldn't have been the guy we had the brake pads for would you? My little brother had a set with him in the car that he said were for a 348 that he was delivering to Le Mans!

My XJ6 2.8 made it all the way there with all the pistons intact. Rather more sedately than planned due to an overdrive keeping dropping out, and we all boiled due to no air con, but we made it none the less!

I'll be back there again in 2012, as this one was awesome.

Regards,

Rich

err...I drive a Toyota.

I got in it, switched it on, drove to Le Mans and back, then switched it off. No drama!

(actually in truth i was fretting a bit as i watched my oil temps climb to 108 on the motorway at 100mph....i need some engine bay fans for that kind of weather! Also got a little bit of knock on my sensor so went home on only 1.1 bar boost to be sure).

Hi Rich - almost!

This might get confusing - I'm Rich, You're Rich and the guy who owns the 348 is also Rich! But yes, essentially they were for the car I went down in!

I'm not 100% sure of the situation re the pads other than he was given poor advice in the first place as they don't need replacing. I don't think he had time to collect them from you/your bro (if that was the final plan??) as on the Friday we spent 7 hours in the car going back to Boluogne to get it back from the garage! We made it back without a problem, despite the usual 3 figure speeds...then the next morning it was leaking again so he had other things on his mind - apologies if you were put out in any way.

Other than that, much like the 355 mentioned above - it went like a dream!

It wasn't a problem for us, no apology needed! They were from the shop my bro works at... it was probably the longest delivery ever! We were wondering if everything had turned out okay though, as we got a text about the radiator issue.

I think the number of breakdown trucks just cruising around looking for trouble tell the story. Mega hot weather plus traffic jams are just too much for many classics, we saw about 4 MGs boiled over in the traffic jam on Saturday morning.

My 911 was nursing a warm-up misfire which made local driving hazardous but was fine on the toll, got me home though smile

The 944 we were going in went Hors de Combat on the Sunday before. So we took my 56 S-Type diesel. Down & back without a hint of a problem, although it did get a bit chilly & we had at one point to turn the climate from 19.5 Deg C to 20... he he.

'73 1275 MG Midget - Intermittent mis-fire started on the A12 on Weds Eve. Quite bad by the time I got LM. Spent the weekend tinkering on and off including stripping the carb. Then on sunday morning one of the plug leads fell off making diagnosis easier ;-). Replaced and went well all the way home. had some clutch slippage getting off the boat at dover in the queues getting up the ramps.

'72 1300 Spitfire. Something not quite right was affecting power above 5000. Then the clutch failed totally outside paris on Sunday night. Returning on a low loader in a few weeks. Driver and some luggage returned with me in the Midget - which was "cosy".

BMW M3 - Driver had a fall on Saturday night/sunday morning. Ended up in A&E - will be there for a couple of days (get well soon Fabs!). Car was fine though as reported by his co-driver who drove it home carefully ;-)

2 x Boxster S + BMW 535D no problems.

Cooling Fan in the Caterham went in Rouen on the way down.

Had to keep the speed up to keep the temp down. When it hit 120 at the toll I was freakin' out!

All fine on the way back until I hit the blackwall tunnel.

Learning lots with the car!

I went with the DDK Early Porsche mob, 37 or so cars and two significant engine failures! Unusual as normally the mechanical bits are fine and it's the little things like ignition and injection that let us down.

The weather was so severe that various other cars were dropping like flies all over the place!

After coming back on the truck in 2006 following a carb fire I was glad to park my 911 back in the garage last night after 1250 miles smile
