Well what the hell.......

My old man has a 2004 Passat TDi which he is bored of and which needs some money spending on it
So he wants a new car - like you do

We were chatting and as his main criteria is towing a caravan I found myself quickly out of my depth

I suggested you could get a lot of petrol 4x4 for your buck but he will only entertain a diesel
Mileage modest but he just wont have a petrol
I suggested a 330d but for reasons I dont understand RWD is a no-no

So here we go:

Budget 14k
Diesel
FWD or 4WD
Has to tow a caravan
My mum must think its a 'nice car' when not towing
Something vaguely desirable for the driver
Must be reliable
Err thats it

And before anyone gets in first he doesnt want an 09MY TDV8 RR Sport for his 14k smile

Im still thinking 330d by the way

Cheers

how about a honda of some sort?, i think most of there models albeit there city cars, come with a towbar as standard and the higher end diesel engines, will easily pull a caravan?

Can he stretch a bit further? Could buy a quality Q7

whats wrong with the VW, its hardly old, has he been conned by a garage seeking work, would a 6 year old VW really need that much work?!

Volvo S60 / V70 /S80 D5
Saab 9-5 - depreciation bit scary at that level though.
Would have said E320/C320 Mercs if not for RWD

My 2p is that he should look at a Toyota landcruiser amazon. Can row anything legal (and many things not legal), comfy for long journeys. Full of features. 4.2turbo diesel is a great engine. They are decent enough inside etc.

You can get an amazon to suit almost any budget.

I have 2 friends who both have caravans, shameful I know - at least they both also have 2 seater classic sports cars to make up for it. Anyway I was quizing them about towing as I want to tow my track car. Advice from them was :-

4x4 or rear wheel drive, front wheel drives bad for towing as traction is poor.
Big V8 ideally or at least a modest sized and cylinder sporting petrol or equivalent diesel
Tow car wants to be heavy
Auto box a bonus
Self leveling air suspension a bonus

The one was very adament that a V8 Range rover was the perfect tow car. The other agreed porvided you didn't mind 18mpg. So I guess get a big diesel engined one and that should be perfect.

Not a bad shout actually, it has a massive towing capacity and isn't a bad car to drive, but will feel agricultural after an '04 Passat.

All the best towing cars are 4x4s but it depends on the size of the plastic cottaging shed you're dragging behind it, if it's only a small one then it doesn't really matter.

Disco TDV6 or XC90 D5 would be nice but can generate eye-watering bills if they go wrong. I think I'd have an Audi A4 V6 TDi Quattro with those criteria, but in reality I'd get over the silly 'no RWD' idea and have a 330d.

It really depends how heavy/large his caravan is!

My suggestions would be:
E60 530d/535d
Any bigger 4x4 - Range Rover, Freelander (weight wise)

If it's a new Sorento, that statement is probably the wrong way around

Don't forget the towing weight rules, most important thing really.
