993 Engine Mounts
Discussion
Hi All,
I'm thinking of changing the engine mounts on my 993 C2. The car has covered 84k miles so I think it's about time. However I'm looking for something that is a little firmer.
I'm thinking of going for the C4 mounts. Am I right in saying that the engine mounts for the C4 is half way between the RS mounts and the C2 mounts?
Spoke to my indy today and for some reason the C4 mounts are half the price of the C2 mounts. Can anyone shed any lights on this?
Also can anyone tell me what the mounts on the targa is like?
Many thanks

...as I understand it - C2 mounts allow movement in two directions, C4 mounts only need to move in one as the extra driveshaft removes the need for the other direction.... oh ask Guards Red; he knows....
But remember; with a 993, Porsche did things for an engineering reason, NOT just to make money. Replace like with like, OR prepare to change other parts to match (engine carrier IIRC)

On a slight tangent, I read on the Pelican Parts website that the 993 engine mounts are 'functionally equivalent' to the 986 Boxster transmission mounts, you just have to swap over the triangular bracket that comes with the Boxster tranny mounts but in the process, you get your replacement mount for half the price of the Boxster part...

Looks identical to the 993 mounts that I purchased. Any part numbers on the body of the mount itself to verify?993 engine mount (inset) Boxster tranny mount (c/w removeable triangular bracket)

What he said. It never ceases to amaze me how many people assume that the hardest mounts are always the best. Same goes for things like poly bushes, spring rates etc. Teams of Engineers spend months tuning the bushes to perfection when the car is being developed, taking into account all manner of parameters. But remember; with a 993, Porsche did things for an engineering reason, NOT just to make money. Replace like with like, OR prepare to change other parts to match (engine carrier IIRC)
Then I guess I am biased as I am one of those Engineers.

And if you fit the RS ones as OC says think about upgrading the engine carrier at some point, eps. if you do trackdays
Hmmm interestin reading,
my c4 has a slight shimmy (this is the only way I can describe it?) when sat at tickover. The car doesn't shake so much but you can feel the engine beating away from side to side. To be honest I just thought that the engine mounts could do with being replaced but could it be that it's the norm on a c4?

Can someone explain why changing the engine mounts changes the handling / feel? I'm lost as I can't see how!
when they are loose the whole engine is swaying around all over the place in the back of the caronce you sort them the car even feels more stable moving along in traffic at 10mph, let alone turning into Pouhon at 100mph+
the difference is enourmous

possibly related but I'm also getting hartech to change the gearbox oil as when the car is cold the gear change can drag slightly, not crunch or anything but you really gave to be slow.my c4 has a slight shimmy (this is the only way I can describe it?) when sat at tickover. Hartech (baz) didn't see any relation between this & the engine mounts as he'd never connected the two problems & thought that as I have no problem with the clutch it sounded like the gearbox oil was possibly the wrong grade or had an additive that thickens it up meaning the synchros can't do there thing when cold as the oil is just too thick.
Read your website jackel & thought I might as well get the mounts done at the same time. Any ideas if this sounds like your problem when you decided to get yours done?
when are you getting yours done craig?
Getting mine done on Tuesday so will let you know how I get on.

Going down to oulton a week on Wednesday so thought I'd call in at hartech on the way there, let them have a look at the mounts & take it from there.

tvp are you getting any symptoms of mount failure or are you just replacing as part of regular maintenance?
