...to insure a 2004 Passat 1.9TDI 130 Highline Estate.

Drivers that must be on it.
- 58 male full NCB
- 24 male 7yrs NCB
- 22 male 2yrs NCB
- 55 female full NCB.

No point or anything.

Who would be best to "own" the vehicle and have it in there name. 58yo and 24yo will use it about the same so ok to have it in either name. Best quote to date is £700, no bad but wondered if there was a better way.

It ain't optional! One must statistically be the main driver.

I'd remove the 22 year old biggrin

too slow

Removing 22yo brings it down to £450, just wondered if there was a way to get a price like this with him on.

Legally? If it is your or your brothers car don't try and pass your parents off as the owner/main user...

Would they consider a much higher excess for the sprog driver? Might be an option to reduce the price?

Don't worry I am not.

I have two cars myself, we are buying an estate for us to all use with a few house moves, house improvements, cycle rides etc all coming up. Me 24 and my dad 58, will use it the most hence why we will put it in either of our names.

I didnt get my 7yrs NCB pulling that fast one!

In that case get the rents to insure it with you and your brother as named drivers. There can be no accusation of fronting if you and your brother have your own insurance polices on your own cars.

What you have to do is to insure the main driver as the main driver (this will be the person who is the main driver of the vehicle and usually the registered keeper) and everyone else as named drivers.

This is the cheapest way to insure it legally.

You must have missed my point. 2 drivers will use it approx the same. To the mile I do not yet know who will use it the most. It wont be ANYONES main vehicle.

I will put it in the name of whoever it is deemed best to insure it with.

Do all 4 drivers have another car of their own?

Just to add to the fun if the 50+ year old male and Female are married then most insurers won't be too concerned about the accuracy of who is the main driver as they assume cars are shared in a marriage.

No 22yo does not. But he will be borrowing it rarely, just for house move and whilst we are on holiday so no issue with fronting.

Sounds like you'd be cheaper hiring a van for the house moves when required and adding him to someone else's insurance on a current car.

If you have to buy the other car try all the different combinations in a price comparison site and you'll get your answer.

My guess would be the older male would be the best bet.

Arent admeral or a similar company have just televised a household multicar insurance type thing... might be worth looking into that... Everyone on the policy gets to save there noclaims aswell...

Just out of curiousity? How did your brother manage to accumulate 2 years no claims if he doesnt own a car? Or did he sell it before he went to uni or move into town or something?

Yeah we tried multicar with Admiral, but all the other cars in the family went up!

My brother has been driving since 17. He has always owned a car but often changed policies or changed cars etc. before claiming his NCB.

He went travelling for 7mths in Jan and back next week.

I have a (periodically) unreliable car and covering 100 miles a day it is a concern. My dad wants an older vehicle for tip runs and station runs and for the price we paid cannot grumble.

If we do not sort him a car to at least use, he will come back and either insist lifts places, or worse still decide to buy a car. He gets extremely determined to get what he wants, which is always crap, and we spend hours and hours looking at these cars and then fixing them when the inevitably go wrong.

Getting him to use this would be less of a family headache all round!
