It turns out that from data studied from a large number of Toyota accidents, that it was driver error from the old granny trick of slowing down an automatic by using full throttle.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100014240527487038...

"The U.S. Department of Transportation has analyzed dozens of data recorders from Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles involved in accidents blamed on sudden acceleration and found that at the time of the crashes, throttles were wide open and the brakes were not engaged, people familiar with the findings said.

The results suggest that some drivers who said their Toyota and Lexus vehicles surged out of control were mistakenly flooring the accelerator when they intended to jam on the brakes. But the findings don't exonerate Toyota from two known issues blamed for sudden acceleration in its vehicles: sticky accelerator pedals and floor mats that can trap accelerator pedals to the floor."

It's still beyond me how anyone, even an American, can be so retarded as to press the wrong pedal

I couldn't believe the one that had a stuck accelerator on the motorway... Instead of phoning someone and praying to god, try turning the ignition off and coasting to a halt..???

This is the result of an elderly person and an automatic Toyota.

These pics were taken back in the 80's in South Africa. The car is a Toyota Cressida.

I've lost count of the number of crashes i've attended where, usually elderly, people have jabbed the wrong pedal. It happens time and time again and baffles me!

Google "crash wrong pedal" and you'll get pages of the more mature driver making similar mistakes.

Doesn't surprise me, how often do you see someone indicating with windscreen wipers or similar.

About 3% of drivers are just incompetent morons.

You don't need to be American. Just old. I remember a particularly ugly incident in Bath where an old gent pulling out of a side road got a bit confused and hit what he thought was the brakes. It wasn't the brakes, and he squished some poor youngster against iron railings. Fatally.

Long before Toyota's current troubles.

To be fair, the brake pedal is always on the same side whereas the indicator isn't

There is a grave yard near me with a nice new wall where some spaz accelerated straight out of the junction and into the grave yard.
