A while back I had some Sony EX90's which were really good. They broke but not after several years of hard use!

So I went onto eBay and bought some top of the range Sony EX700's. They turned out to be fake (I thought they would be for the £7 I paid for them but I was broke at the time!) but have been very good really. Until I started cycling to work every day. Now they fall out of my ears all the time while riding.

What do people use that are like these (I am talking in-ear isolating earphones)?

A few years ago I had some Shure e5c's I think they were. I found them pretty uncomfortable both the part in the ear and the lead over the top of the ear.

So I am leaning towards the (real) Sony E700's as I know I fine the in-ear part comfy and the lead goes down. However all the reviews are telling me that the Shure E530's are better.

What are people's thoughts?

Many thanks
Mark

[The masses]Not wear them when cycling [/The masses]

I use Sennheiser CX 300-II. They come with a range of different rubber bungs so you can size them perfectly.

Oddly enough, after a some fiddling with the different size bungs, I ended up with one ear need a smaller bung than the other.

I must be OCD because it really annoys the feck out of me.

Is that not a bit risky listening to tunes when out? I tend to avoid as I would never know if someone is really to close or just that feeling you are not fully aware of your surroundings.

Most people seem to listen to headphones at very high levels with ambient noise about too.

Interesting point of view. I ride for around 40 minutes a day, most of it on dull cycle tracks with nothing to look at. I share my commute with probably around a hundred or so other cyclists. I am yet to see a single one that is not wearing headphones.

Surely it is no different really to having a car stereo? How many people don't use their car stereos when driving?

I am pretty aware of what is around me in just the same way as when driving. I can't see it makes any difference except gives me some added motivation. My wife runs a lot and has found she cannot run without headphones on as she needs that extra motivation.

Risk.
Car = insurance claim.
Bike = death.

I use my ears a lot when cycling but mostly because I am too lazy to look round all the time.
This is another reason to hate Prius drivers.

Hmm. According to the Road Casualties Online site only 117 people on non-motorised vehicles died in 2008 as opposed to 1,849 people in cars.

Of course as a percentage, it is still more people on bikes but certainly not huge numbers. As I said, I rarely see anyone cycling not wearing headphones.

Anyway, back to the subject in hand....

Me too, 1 ear always falls out and the other one is snug, 1 foot is bigger than the other also, maybe just deformed.

one of the cycling camelbaks I was looking at has a "iPod" pocket...

When riding to work, 80% is off-road trails and I use the headphones then. On the road I tend to find it un-nerving finding something suddenly appear beside you so tend to take them out.

I use the CX-II 300's too. Very good headphones which stick in your ear nicely, great sound and have natural sound-deadening (so wind noise etc is less of an issue). The sound deadening has it positives and drawbacks - you can turn the volume right down as wind noise isn't a factor (my MP3 player is usually at level 1 or 2 and perfectly audible), but whilst you can hear external noise, you can't place where it is coming from.

Mirrors lessen that risk as you can see around yourself much easier. As a competent, experienced cyclist I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've worn headphones.

Unless she runs in the traffic, it's probably less of an issue. wink

On a side note. I recently got Sennys 300 ii's Good, bit of wind whistling, and a bd to put in your ear. Good sound though. Best headphones I ever had were with my old walkman mp3 player. Full noise cancelling jobs. Could walk down Oxford Street only hearing music!

Am not a lover of riding wiht headphones, but that is because i ride on the road not on trails. When I have, I've used those that hook over the ear,Like these:

That way I didn't need them in to hear what i was listening too. These days better sense has me listening to everything. It's amazing what you hear when you're not being pumped full of music, I much prefer it.

What do you think!

Put yourself in the position, you havd just knocked this cretin off his bike (when it was no fault of your own), i.e. he could not hear you coming and was not paying thye correct level of attention when driving / riding a vehicle on the public road.

The guy is a F*ckwit.

I don't actually remember asking for people's opinion on whether or not I should wear earphones while travelling on well marked cycle paths and off-road.

Is there any chance we could get back to the question I asked please. Moderators any chance that you could clean up the thread please in case other people searching might like to know the answer!

Oh dear oh dear.

It was a fat prick on a bike wearing earphones that flattened my Mrs and then rode off, presumably because he was like most cyclists and uninsured despite the fact that a fat git on a bike at 25mph can kill someone.

Cyclists should be licensed and insured.
