Hi I have a 2003 M3 with SMG box.....on longer journeys, the car occasionally and randomly, slips into neutral. I have to coast over to the side of the road and wiggle the gear shifter around until eventually 1st gear appears. It never happens on short journeys..(so far) (Acutally it only happens with my wife driving) and I have yet to experience it personally.

The warning lights came on the dash, so I have had new software installed and a new relay....after the software install and relay change, it has happened again, on a long journey. I think that the warning lights came on and our non-BMW mechanic suggests a new hydro electro selector unit at a cost of £2k and I am not so sure.

The warning lights are now off and it hasn't happened since, but we've done no long journey's either. By long journeys, I mean in excess of 30 minutes. Its happened about 3-4 times over 8 months.
Your help would be appreciated hugely.

I have the exact same problem with my e46 m3. Had to coast to the side of the road in neutral.

There are quite a few posts about it in the search section which describe it as a possible SMG pump issue. Unfortunately no matter the reason, i am prepared to spend some major £££££

I've spent a long time looking at the web, and wow, how useful can it be. I found an online BMW engineer with a solution. My garage recommended a new relay (cheap) didn't work, and now a new hydraulic pump (very expensive).

They didn't tell me that there were very unusual temperature readings for the smg hydraulic fluid on the computer log. !!!!

The SMG hydraulic pump has a temperature gauge (circa £20 plus fitting).

Now, I'm no expert but if the car only does this when its hot (typical on longer journey's), and not when its running around on a school run, then it cannot just be a pump, as if it were that major, it would do it all the time.

I had the temperature gauge fitted today, so Im gonna send the car off on a long run, fingers crossed.!!!
