Someone crashed into my car, should I tell my insurance?
Discussion
Hello, The lady in our office backed into my parked car.
It has damaged the rear wing quite badly.
She has reported it to her insurer (AA insurance).
As its her fault, do I need to report it to my Insurer (Elephant) ?
If I do report it to my insurer will I have to stump up the £250 excess?
Any ideas,
Thanks,
Golders

hello 300bhp,
I got a estimate this morning for the damage and they reckon
£1985 for new wing spraying door boot, removing roof (i'ts an MX5)
etc.
So will have to go insurance route.
She has phoned her insurance and got a claim number which she has given me.
I guess I will have to phone Elephant as I had to give her my policy number
to give to AA insurance.

Thanks for that info guys. I will give them a ring in a minute.
(my car was parked up whilst i was in the office, so can't be my fault
one would hope)
Before you rush to do anything, I'd speak to the lady and see if she wants to settle outside insurance.(my car was parked up whilst i was in the office, so can't be my fault

Most claims involve a compulsory and voluntary excess to be paid (lots of people misunderstand that there's two). And if a claim is made against here she'll not only pay the excesses but also have higher insurance.
For this reason she may be more than happy to sort it out with cash. So get a quote to fix your car. Add a £100 on for your time and tell how much you want.
If not, then the claim is through her insurance and not yours, so shouldn't affect your NCB or cost you an excess charge.

Therefore, even though it's not your fault, you'll generally have your premium loaded.
In some cases, it can be cheaper to get it sorted without going through the insurance companies.
(I did say 'in some cases' for the hard of reading.)

My parked car was hit by a lady skidding in the snow last winter. I did everything through her insurance co (She did not want to pay out in cash). Took a while and a bit of a headache for me but it was all sorted in the end.
Come renewal time, my insurance company knew about it and loaded my new quote with a non fault claim.
They share all their info don't you know.
So with the cost of loaded premiums for the next 5 years it would have been cheaper to pay for the damage myself.
