This seems reasonable even with the stated problems as long as everything else is ok.
What do you think?

That looks in really good nick. Get it over to Phil Crouch and he'll strip and rebuild both vanos units for not much more than BMW charge for 1 replacement (not inc. fitting).

Certainly a bargain for someone. If I had room for another I'd be having that!

I'd be worried about more than just the Vanos on that.

And why not pics of the rear? I'm thinking it might well have a bit of rust.

It's also sitting on 181,000 miles, with no service history after 140,000.

Once you buy the car for £4,000, then spend say, at a conservative estimate, £2,500 - £3,000 rebuilding both vanos units, it's not IMO that much of a bargain.

I'd rather spend slightly more, and get a lower mileage car with service history and no mechanical issues.

I've just has both my vanos units stripped and rebuilt plus the timing set up and a few other bits and bobs and the bill was under £1500.

So even at £5.5k total outlay, in my eyes, that's still a bargain. Of course, there may be other bits not quite right with it but a decent pre-purchase inspection should spot anything expensive and requiring immediate attention.

I'm using my friends experience as a basis for the costs.

He has just got his M5 back on the road after having to completely rebuild one vanos unit.

The cost of parts alone (oil seals, complete solenoid pack and gears) was over £1,000 from Dr Vanos, on top of that several hours labour had to be added.

Blimey, that sounds really expensive as I was quoted (IIRC) a complete new vanos unit from BMW @ £1350 + VAT when mine started playing up. Luckily, someone recomended I take it to Phil Crouch. wink

BMW dealer quoted £5,700 all in to replace both units.

With their usual cavalier attitude to costs, they decided that because one unit had failed, they might as well just replace the working one as well.

Needless to say he went elsewhere.

If you could do the fix yourself it'd be a bargain, but if not why not give 6 and a half and buy one with no issues?

Well it is still for sale so maybe not the red hot bargain they say it is.

A mate of mine called me about this today as he was keen. I advised him against it as I reckon you'd need to spend £2-3k on it and you'd have a £7k M5 with 180k on the clock and hugely incomplete service history. Reckon there are better "bargains" out there.

Ir might be worth a punt but once you have spent money on the vanos, thrust arm bushes (and prob new arms as ball joints will be screwed), rear ball joints, new suspension, various other items that BMW consider good for life but actually will need replacing like fuel pump/filter. Even if an inspection gives it the all clear (which is unlikely) the money you would need to set aside as a fighting fund at this mileage would be potentially prohibitive. There are a good few E39 M5's with well over 200k on the clock but they have been fettered and cared for from a young age.
When was the clutch last replaced at around £1200 a pop etc. You are still left with a very high mileage example that you will struggle to move on and recoup anything like your outlay.

Hmmm, Seller seems really blase about how easy the VANOS is to sort... Makes it sound like a real DIY job. I would say don't try this at home!

Other than that the car looks good. As previously stated though the car is only worth £5.5k to 6K fixed... Do the math (as our American friends say!)

Cant be, advert was placed on 12th July, eight days in and no takers? Nobody has beaten a path to his door yet. I am not sure I would pay 4K with the Vanos sorted.

I stopped in to look at this car today just out of interest really. (I'd agree with everyone else about it's value & cost to fix). It's still there but apparantly he has taken a deposit on it. So someones feeling brave.
