higher taxes for graduates??

It's b

What if you don't go to uni but earn a fortune? What if you go to uni but did Art and are starving?
Our current tax system is largely fair (barring Labour's 50% crud). It's based on ability to pay but (used to) tops out at 40%.
If you get a degree and it helps you earn a lot you'll pay more tax.
The only upside I can see of a Graduate Tax is that it would, inevitably, encourage people to go on vocational degree courses likely to help them get well-paid employment.
It would also encourage UK graduates to move abroad and pay tax to other countries, instead. Not a great idea...

Sounds fair to me - an investment up front by the Gov't, followed by a repayment by the candidate once they have a job.
Or have I missed something?
If it's a repayment it would be a student loan - something we have now. A graduate tax would be something you just have to pay if you have some letters after your name. What's the betting it would be applied to ALL graduates, not just new ones. And do you think the poor bOr have I missed something?
ds who owe student loans would be forgiven them because they were now paying Graduate Tax? HmmmDon said:

So, you get a degree in Chemistry, find there are no available jobs and end up starting a plumbing business only to have to fork out on paying for many others to get degrees in David Beckham studies?
First stupid idea I've heard from this coalition.
Unfortunately, this is a legacy from NULabours degress-for-all policy - so are you proposing that Grants be provided for 'proper' subjects only? I'd certainly go along with this.First stupid idea I've heard from this coalition.

Good idea. I'd say there are too many doing Chemistry. Don't expect the tax payer to pay for you to do it just because you feel like it.First stupid idea I've heard from this coalition.
I'd propose that you should pay for the eductation you choose to take up.
I'm all for bright students short on cash being helped out on proper courses, but that should be a side issue. I don't see why you should be made to pay for students doing proper degrees even just because you've become a financial success having happened to have taken a degree course.

we need to accept university isn't for everyone, trying to send everyone there just devalues it and we end up with degrees we don't need
There needs to be a move away from this obsession that it's a job that only a graduate can do logic, where they just end up using it as a filtering device
I think the individual should take it on, but that it should be paid back by the employer over 20 years if it's a job that requires a degree, if the person chooses not to work or to work for a year then have a family instead, it's their debt and it's never paid off until they die
It shouldn't be on income tax, it's not fair to ask those who have become successful without a degree to pay
The graduate tax would be unfair as it would encourage people to stay longer doing things they don't need, phds, post docs, i have a friend who got a first, did a phd and then a post doc but then decided industry was too stressful so went off to become a teacher, so we've paid for a massive level of education for him to teach chemistry
If you drop out you'll still have a job but never be able to get a graduate job, so you'll have to pay it yourself, this sounds harsh but drop outs have cost the country for nothing and have deprived someone else of getting a place, people should take going to university seriously, it should never be just part of life experience. But if you g, work hard, get a job with a company that specifically want graduates, then your education is free and it's paid for by the company that was sure it needed a graduate rather then a non graduate.

Can't work. It misses the whole point.
Basically, if someone goes to univercity and then goes on to get a well paid career because of it then they are paying more in tax anyway.
The problem is the non degrees that serve no purpose and those who never go on to be higher rate tax payers after graduation. They need to be weeded out.
The Govt should subsidise the courses which it feels are important skills for the future of GB.
Non degrees should have a hefty premium on them to discourage wasters and ultimately cause the uni to kull the course.
Ultimately the retirement age should be a fixed period of working not a set age, so that those who leave school and start work can retire earlier than those who go on to further education.
We need to close down many univercities and convert them to skills academies where a 16 year old can go and learn to be a plumber, builder, mechanic, social worker, etc.
I'm afraid that it should not stop at unis either. There should be no free schooling where the parents can afford to pay. There should be a modest charge for state schooling for those who are higher rate tax payes to ensure that those who are not and can least afford it have the best resources available to their child to give them the best start in life. It would also focus the parents minds more on the schooling of their children if they had to pay.
I'm sick and tired of everything having to be free for everyone in this country. It is wrong. Welfare should and must only be availbale for those who genuinely need it. Everyone else must pay.
We should have a standard rate of taxation. A familly income below a certain level gets free schooling, healthcare etc, and families above a certain income level have to pay quarterly healthcare and education fees or go private.

so 2 people do the same degree one gets a first one gets a 2:2. the guy who gets a first gets a better job and pays more for his degree. total crap, terrible policy.
