Golf Mk 4 Help
Discussion
Need some help, my brother has just got a Golf GT TDI, V reg to use for a few months but it has a few issues which need to be sorted.
1 – The speedo does not work and every time you start it a message pops up saying ‘oil sensor visit workshop’. I have checked the oil and its fine and have even given in a service but the light is still on. The odometer does not tick over and the speedo does not work, however the rev needle works fine.
2 – Need to get a spare key for it, I have had a look and a few people are selling the key fobs on ebay, just a bit confused over which to buy and also how to get them coded and cut, can anyone do this, have experience of this?
3 – The front valance / lip spoiler that sits under the front bumper has been ripped off, need to find a replacement but all the local scrap yards say this can not be sold as a single part and I have to buy the entire bumper, surely this is not the case, I just need the little black plastic strip that goes under the bumper, any idea where I can get one from?
Thanks in advance.

If the speedo is anything like those fitted to mk2/3 golfs then there is every chance that either the speedo drive has fallen out of the back of the clocks which means half the dash has to come out or the drive cog on the gearbox end has fallen off and gone into the gearbox - its a orange plastic cone shaped part. The cog will need fishing out and a new one put on.
Front splitter - a different scrapyard or ebay would be a good call as you can definately seperate the lower splitter from the rest of the bumper.
Regarding the key, you can buy them blank off ebay but you need a dealership or someone with VAGCOM to code it to your car so the immobaliser works.

1) There is a sensor in the sump. It works by heating itself up, then measuring how long it takes to cool down. Depending on the result it "thinks" that the oil is low. Check the wiring as it can short out. It goes from the sump, up the back of the engine, round under the battery to the ECU under the wipers. The sensors are not immune to failing. Check the bonnet lock switch and change the oil. However, coupled with the dash insert problems. Try the old favourite of removing the dash unit. Unplugging both plugs on the back (cable speedo drives haven't been on Golfs since 1991!!!!) and reconnecting it all after 10mins. Also check the position sensor screwed into the top of the gearbox. Particularly the wiring to it.1 – The speedo does not work and every time you start it a message pops up saying ‘oil sensor visit workshop’. 2) The remoote part is relatively easy to get coded by someone with a VAG com. The key part (that goes in the lock) needs to have the right type of rolling key code. And needs to be coded by a VW dealer ideally. But a better indie might be ok too.
3) The splitter/chin spoiler/etc etc is availiable in 2 parts. From VW dealers. Can't remember the price.
