I heard 'Life In Tokyo' on the radio the other day, instant flashback to my youth and remembered this album, I had it on tape in the car (yes that long ago) and actually wore out 2 copies of it I played it so much.

Managed to get a copy on Fleabay for a couple of quid (which was a result), got delivered yesterday, damn I'd forgotten just how good this album was.

Compilation IIRC. Life in Tokyo and Quiet Life both brilliant.

This is weird. Went through Spotify listening to Japan last night reminiscing. Not heard them since I had them on tape donkeys years back, and promptly added a few on amazon.

Fantastic stuff. Listening to the Oil on canvas album sent shivers down my spine.

Japan, David Sylvian, Mick Karn, Barbieri, etc. - all utterly fantastic musicians.

Rain Tree Crow was more of a Sylvian album, but generally excellent.

I've been more of a fan of Sylvians post Japan work though. The one with Holger Czukay (sp?) was damn near impossible to listen to, whilst the Fripp collaborations were incredible.

And for those who don't know, Mick Karn was diagnosed with cancer a few months back : http://www.mickkarn.net/

My personal favourite was the first album, Adolescent Sex.

Quiet Life wasn't bad, but they seemed to change direction a bit for that (and later) albums.

At which point I lost interest in them.

Interestingly, my wife hates the first album, but loves their later stuff.

ETA: corrected spelling..

Two tracks on the Gentlemen Take Polaroids album - Nightporter and Taking Islands in Africa - really stand out for me. I got into them in the mid to late 80s and used to play those tracks over and over again. Very distinctive sound and as a result, really takes me back!

bks I'm off under the stairs to dust off these old classics which haven't had an airing in over 10 years.
