I'm getting rid of my current steed in order to fund my wife's MSc (aren't I good?) I'll have about £2000 left, so the question is what to get. I'm thinking of upsizing somewhat with a Mondeo sized car, but apart from the obvious, what else is there? I might consider Focus/Golf types, but they generally seem the same price or more expensive than the bigger cars for some reason.

I'd prefer a diesel (can't believe I just said that), but other than that, just generally cheap running costs. I'm fairly handy with a spanner after having an Elise for the last couple of years though, so that may help.

You might find a nice E39 if you're lucky...

My '98 528 se was about that much late last year and is a superb car.

The best E34 540 you can find, and to hell with the fuel consumption. Worked for me.

Some good suggestions, but cost saving is of the order and I don't think an old Beemer will satisfy that.

I'm after something for 18-24 months that'll need cheap/minimum maintenance. If it turns out to be a good un then I'll keep it along with the fun car I'll get when SWMBO is earning too!

Decent TDCi Focus then- Very good handling and parts won't break the bank.

[/S Line Luxury mode]Actually, you could get a lot of AUDI style for £2k.[/off]

A Civic VTi of some description could be an outside bet. Or sod running costs and get a 200SX.

2K? Sounds like a late model 300-TDI Discovery to me smile Diesel, lots of space, great driving position, and cheap running costs if you know your way round a spanner, not that there's much to break as it's pretty simplistic. Avoid the Late Autos as they do have ECU's though.
