My Muse Of The Day is this ERA HSS:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TIGER-ERA-SINGLE-SEATER-RACE...

It's beautiful, fast, noisy and less than half the cost of a new kit.

But I understand it isn't allowed at track days. Is that right, and can anything be done to get around the rules?

I imagine it isn't allowed because it's an open wheeler? (But it would be bloody awesome to have that on a track - not dear either!).

Would one be able to fashion something a bit similar to this??

The other thing that might hold it back is the noise levels - no idea what that produces?

What you could do is get your race license and then drive it on test days rather than track days??

A very tempting thing to buy!

Cheers

I'd strongly recommend it, no silly overtaking rules, usually less cars, and fewer numpties in Ferrari's and such backing you up in the corners and dragging you out on the straights.

I said fewer

The only issue is that you'll have to keep an eye on your mirrors more, as you can get some seriously hot stuff going round, I've been on track at the same time as a boggo MGB at Rockingham (in a Porsche GT3 racing car) and the closing speed was somewhere between comical and scary

Most track day forms say "No open wheeler or formula single seaters". So I assumed that neant this wouldn't be allowed even with some mudguards. Can anyone advise?

Race Licence seems a lot of effort to go to just for the chance to do some hooning.

I wonder what it would take to get that thing road legal...

I'd love something like this and road legal but I'd imagine there's a fair bit of work to be done. You'd have to have compliant lights and bodywork, not sure about seatbelts, IIRC there are certain types of harnesses that are road legal. There's probably a great deal more that I haven't even contemplated, hopefully someone will be along shortly to fill in the gaps.

Just having a quick skim through the SVA requirements and most of the stuff would be possible to do but if it requires an enhanced SVA then you would need to provide evidence of front and side impact protection, could see that being a problem.

I believe someone on here has an old Lotus formula car (a Lotus 21 maybe) converted for road use.

Dead right, and with good reason. The performance differential would be just too big. A bit like having an F1 car in a Formula Ford.

Unlike Bernie's circus where Formula Fords now start at the back of the F1 grid...

It's actually pretty easy and not that expensive. In fact, not much more than doing a track day in your own car, if at all.

Could you get away with a Clubman, or would you need a B or A for test days?

I believe Nat B, defo not Nat A, no idea about Clubman.

If you had your race licence, you would also be able to enter it for some races if you fancied.

TBH, I would just do that and do the test days.

Very attractive car!

You could always hillclimb/sprint the thing, too.

That's something I did a little of many years ago, and I've always toyed with the idea of doing it again. This car would give me the perfect excuse... smile

There is a road-legal Formula Vee for sale here:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1630421.htm

Would that be allowed on track-days?
