How many Nuke's have been tested/used?
Discussion
Any idea what sort of number of nuclear weapons have been used or tested? This link will show you:

Bit of an eye opener.
I would have guessed 3/400 or so.
Appologies if repost.

That video is tedious beyond comprehension.
How many was it?
Is there fallout from nuclear tests?
Yes, it starts real slow, try forwarding it to the 1960's though. The last little it of the film condenses the explosions into just a few seconds for each country involved. How many was it?

Most tests were either underground or air burst, so no fallout. Fallout only occurs from ground burst, or low level air burst.
Well over 2000 total.

Yes. An interesting fact - well I think it is - is that because all steel today is slightly radioactive, the steel used for health physics whole body monitors is typically taken from sunken ships prior to 1945 as it pre-dates the nuclear age.How many was it?

OP - the testing is one thing, but have a read of this...

If you like nuclear weapons, and like pictures, this is a good book - http://www.michaellight.net/work100suns.html
It has pictures of lots of tests, and a timeline of countries nuclear stockpiles during the cold war.

Went to Hiroshima last week.
Very moving.
The city of Hiroshima issues a formal letter of protest against all such tests, including subcritical nuclear tests. The protest is sent directly to the country responsible. These protests began on September 9, 1968, after the French test of a hydrogen bomb. To date, 588 formal protests have been issued.

A mate of mine married the former Ms Hiroshima, if she's the result they need to drop a few of them over here too. Very moving.

I knew it was around 2000 Nukes detonated. shame they've often been tested in some beautiful places (Bikini Atol etc).
My ex wife's uncle was on Christmas Island during the tests. He was saying that when he was sitting in the trench with his hands over his face and his eyes closed he could see the bones in his hands when it went off. Wicked!

Are there any figures for the amount of airborne contaminants released by these tests, in relation to the effects on the population?
Yes, but it's negligible due to the location of the detonation. The weapon design also plays a part in the quantity of fission product release. The air-det- ground-det weapons were all "clean (i.e. designed for bang and not FPs)" (officially). ETA - Bikini Atoll contamination readings from Wiki
"The dose received from background radiation on the island was found to be between 2.4 mSv/year and 4.5 mSv/year (the lower rate is the same as natural background radiation) assuming that a diet of imported foods were available.[16] But it was because of these food risks that the group eventually did not recommend fully resettling the island."
Current uk worker limits set by NII are 20 mSv max with an objective limit of 1mSv. Average UK public dose is 2.5mSv.
