The ex Mrs has just been offered a job in Preston

I've never been, what's it like?

Anyone live there?

Not especially a sthole, like anywhere else there are good and bad parts. A lot better than it used to be in the 60s/70s...(imo)

Has the advantage of being close to the M6.

I left 2 years ago. woohoo Its a ducking dive, second only to Blackpool. There are some really very nice villages nearby though which makes it slightly better.

I'm a southerner so im a tad biased

Pretty sure the job is near the city centre. She can't drive but I expect a bus journey would be fine if there are some nice areas you can suggest?

I imaging getting a bus with the locals each day will encourage her to take driving lessons!

I always thought Preston was a bit cut off from other places. It's a fair old drive to a city. Plus point are that its not too far from the Lake District and it's close enough to Lancaster to board a ferry to the Isle of Man for a bit of a hoon. driving

I grew up around the Preston area. The town itself is a dump and parts of it are a ghetto. There are however some very nice villages not too far away, but public transport isn't the greatest from them. Towards Blackpool you have Wrea Green and the like. Towards Blackburn you have Brindle or Salmesbury. Better equipped with transport and still ok, but more suburban than village you have Hoghton or Clayton-le-Woods.

I've been working in the Fulwood area for a few months now, mainly I'm just happy that it's close enough to the lakes for me to commute! Preston itself seems to be largely a bit grim although there are definately nicer areas on the outskirts - not sure what public transport would be like though!

It's a very bland place, almost nothing happens there. It's about as exciting as a visit to Slough

The golden jubilee year. When HRH paid a visit.

Living just up the A59 in Blackburn and driving to Preston everyday, New Hall Lane & Ribbleton are to be avoided.

Penwortham is nice, as is Broughton (just north of Preston on the A6).

In the centre, there are some quite nice Georgian properties around Avenham.

Or there's Blackburn. Beardwood/Revidge are quite nice areas, 10 minutes from jcn 31 of the M6, regular bus to centre of Preston.

It's not that bad, although I wouldn't really want to live there. I like the bus station though, most people don't!

The bonus is that it is very close to some very nice villages in the Forest of Bowland, some great countryside and some great driving roads.

Live in Blackpool work in Preston. Honestly its awful and I wouldn't want to live here though I can't see its much different to all other town/city centres of similar size.

There is a hell of a lot of scrotes around Friargate where my office is based intermingled with the cultured student population!!

PS LordPikey is your house in Newton for sale? looking to move to a more rural location and a couple of places in Newton are on the radar...
