Perhaps someone on here can help. I'm after insurance on - probably - an old Ford Ka (dont laugh!) for wife and my 17 year old son. He'll be starting driving in two weeks and we can get fully comp for around £800 until he's passed his test. After that, it's around £3,000!! Can anyone suggest a company that specialises in youngsters, and can reduce this horrendous quote?

MoreThan do a product for youngsters which reduces their premium in return for no late night driving.

A very clever idea, they put a tracker in the car and any trips after a certain time there is an extra payment required. I am sure 17 yr olds just love this kind of product!

There's a company called Coverbox which specialise in "pay as you drive" insurance. So you pay per mile rather than in one big lump at the beginning. If you're not thinking of doing a lot of driving then it may be worth investigation.

Otherwise, your best bet is comparison sites like GoCompare and Moneysupermarket. Is your wife going to be the main driver or is it going to be your son? Insurance will be ludicrous if it's in your son's name but if your wife is the main driver then it can reduce premiums - but it's a bit of a grey area in terms of fronting. Unfortunately insurance for young 'uns is ludicrous prices so it's not going to be a pleasant quote either way!

It may be worth investigating Pass Plus and IAM schemes to see if they will knock your son's insurance down any further. As for the Ka - not a bad choice, they're quite fun to drive. smile

Edit: Directline also offer the "curfew" style policy, I think it's called direct drive or something.

Been thereirked. Done all the searching and the cheapest we could find for ours was £2600 TPFT for a 1.1 106rolleyes. That was with Quinn earlier in the year, they are still trading but not accepting new policies.
Direct Line seem to be popular amongest his mates.

Your going to have to pull your pants down i'm afraid, and get prepared to be shafted!
Girls are up to 50% cheaper than boys to get insured at 17yrs.
My lad passed his test in Sept 09, drives a 1.1 106....The car is registered and insured in his mothers name, with myself, and our son as a named driver.....premium is £1600 third party fire & theft. There is no main user before anyone starts talking about fronting, we all have equal use of the car.

Premiums are calculated on risk, and young lads are a serious liability it seems!

Good luck.

Try Elephant/Bell/Admiral all the same company but seem to be cheap for young drivers.

Either that or suggest your lad gets a sex change, initial cost will be a little higher but the savings on insurance will pay dividends over the next 5-10 years.

Yep If I were an insurance company I wouldn't want to touch em either, see too many idiots on the road.

My plan was to get a 20yr old land rover and that is going to be about £900 fully comp with Footman James or similar. An excellent way to get a sensible insurance quote that starts a 17 yr old with his own insurance and I get to take it out for some green laning as well.

Don't bother with Endsleigh because they put your premiums up by £350 once you get to 3 years no claims. And the fkers had the cheek to send me a letter saying "Fed up with paying too much for your car insurance?".
