I wonder if they will get Super Hornets in the interim like they have here in Oz. Admittedly I think Canada have rebuilt a lot of their current Hornets with new bits and they didn't have to replace the F1-11.

They've done more than their fair share in Afghanistan.

Interesting. I presume that they're buying the CTOL variant, which uses the boom and receptacle method for AAR. Can anyone tell me what method the Canadian forces use for AAR? I've a suspicion that it's probe and drogue...

It's probe and drogue - like the RAF (and US Navy/Marines).

Wonder what they've got planned for that mismatch then (again, presuming they're getting CTOL jets). Fuel Systems design is one of the responsibilities of the UK (along with aft fuselage manufacture etc...), so if any sort of re-design is needed that is good news for us.

I think it works out just short of $140million per plane.

About going rate really.

That'll be canadian dollars.
And half of that is to cover 20 years worth of support.

So no where near as much as it sounds.

Gotcha - still sounds a lot as a headline figure for a plane with a lot of empty space and no weapons systems. Awesome aircraft though!

I heard at Fairford that the SAAB Grippen program came in 20% under budget and the unit cost for each aircraft is under $30 million, is that figure for the F-35 include through life support or just per unit cost?

Either way the F-35 aint cheap.

I doubt that the Gripen is to buy at $30million. I would think closer to $50million.

With regards to the F-35, that price is per plane. (to my understanding) However, Canada being a close ally would receive spare parts and weapons relatively easily as opposed to say an Asain/Middle Eastern country.
