hi, at some point they changed the tax bandings around so that cars registered after March 2001 wre subject to higher tax groupings if they are a bit juicy, for example the tax on a classic impreza would be much cheaper than on a bugeye.

i heard somewhere that they changed it around a bit but cant seem to find any info on it.

a friend is considering an impreza but the tax banding is putting him off anything newer than a classic (although everyone knows the classics are best anyway but the later cars are much more solid vehicles and he might occasionally put kids in it)

does anyone know how it works now? thanks

Still 2001...

Currently in the same boat, decided it's probably not worth buying older unless it's the model you want anyway

It's 'only' saving just over £200pa in a worst case scenario, and if the car you're looking at is in the highest tax band you're going to be spending a lot more on fuel unless you only do a few thousand miles a year.

Caveat is if they suddenly decide to go ballistic with the highest band and ramp it up x2 or x3 the cost

25mpg average over 10k miles a year will cost you over £2000 in petrol based on the current average price of fuel close to me
