Can anyone advise if this is major damage or is it "cover" damage ??

i.e : is it just a case of buying new rocker cover (I assume that's the correct term for it?)

Never seen anything like it. If it is just the cover then not to much of a problem, Easy to change over and I would think not to much second hand. Do you have ant ider how it happend? Check the car is running ok. The engines have a good reputation for not bracking much.

From what i'm being told it a rocker / valve cover. Had a look online & a brand new one is about £220.

May need to see if there is any bmw/mini breakers yards in the west midlands area to pick one up cheaper.

Not got a clue what caused it, just noticed it while topping up washer fluid.

I assume it's advisable to get it replaced before i get any engine modifications done?

I had a cracked one on a 360bhp Celica for years. Araldite is your friend...

A lot of places will ship, look in the mini mags etc. If you have any problems try minimatt. I now they will do the part and do shipping but have never used them my self.

Looks more like a casting fault.
Probably not a crack all through. I'd whip it off and have a look. No leaks by look of it, so I'd just keep an eye on it to see if it worsens. If car is running fine, I wouldn't worry but as i said just keep an eye on it.

If you can pick up a spare cheap in the meantime then problem solved.
