Hi folks, 2001 bug-eye wrx, complete brake overhaul 1000 miles ago, 4 new calipers 4 new discs mintex pads, now getting a clunk when stopping and a grinding sound at low speed, cant here it for exhaust at higher speeds, have chacked back plates are not fouling discs, did remove a small stone that had lodged in between NSR backplate and disc but noise still there, any ideas.

Just make sure those calipers are nicely bolted in there. They might just need a re-torque.

If the discs weren't put onto absolutely spotlessly cleaned hubs then even a bit of copper grease between the hub and the disc would be enough so that after 1000 miles you would be getting some runout. Might be worth getting a dial gauge on those discs just to see if there is any runout.

The flat springs that sit on top of the pads might be the wrong way round as they do go on a certain way. It's possible that if you get them on the wrong way every time you apply the brakes moving forward you get a clunk with the pads moving slightly in the caliper. A lot of WRX's get that when braking while reversing which seems to be the norm so i figure those springs might not be on the right way as they don't normally make that noise going forward.

Are the shoes in the rear parking brake drums adjusted properly. If they are adjusted too much to the drum they will bind and you will hear scraping at low speed.

Backplates again, i've had this a couple of times, specially when turning, they scrape if they are not far enough from the brake discs.

Depending on what discs you get it's possible that if they are cheap chinese blanks that have been machined badly over here they will be prone to DVT (Disc Variation Thickness). Caused by a combination of too much runout, cheap disc material and pads that don't like getting hot.

Hope something here helps thumbup
